El logotipo de Columbia Pictures es la propia Columbia, la personificación femenina de América, diseñado en 1924 y la identidad de la mujer nunca ha sido revelada, aunque hay decenas de mujeres que afirman serlo. En 1962, Bette Davis aseguraba en su autobiografía que el modelo era Claudia Dell, mientras que en 1987 la revista People apuntaba a la modelo y actriz Amelia Batchler y en 2011 el Chicago Sun-Times aseguraba que la mujer era Jane Bartholomew, una extra de Columbia. Pero si tenemos en cuenta los cambios que ha sufrido el logotipo a lo largo de los años, es más que posible que las tres fuentes estén en lo cierto. El logotipo que podemos ver hoy en día fue creado en 1993 por Michael J. Deas, a quien Sony Pictures Entertainment pidió que devolviera a la mujer su aspecto original. Oleg Aleksandrovich Loiewski was an American fashion and costume designer. He was born in Paris and came from an aristocratic Russian family. Technically, by blood he was a count. His mother started a fashion house in Paris Cassini studies political science before fashion design. His first real fashion job was at the House of Patou (see past post). He started his own house in Rome, but when he immigrated to the US and began designing for Columbia Pictures, things really took off. He designed the costumes for many well known films in the starting in the 1940’s and continued to design movie costumes until his death in 2006. Cassini enlisted in the armed services during WWII, serving in both the coast guard and the army. After the war he worked on film costumes while simultaneously running a ready-to-wear line out of NYC. He also made wedding gowns and formal wear. Cassini was Jackie Kennedy designer while she was First Lady, he was literally titled “Secretary of Style”. Some of his other famous clients included Gene Tierney and Grace Kelly. He married Tierney and was engaged to Kelly. The Columbia Pictures’ Torch Lady at Rest. Jenny Joseph was who helped Kathy Anderson and Michael Deas create the legendary lady. The iconic figure has been gracing the silver screen ever since the company was founded in 1924. In 1991 Deas was commissioned to create a new matte painting for Columbia Pictures. He asked Kathy to help take reference photos for the painting and just like that Kathy’s New Orleans apartment was quickly converted into a makeshift photo studio. . While resting between the shoot, Jenny sat down exhausted. That’s when Kathy took the shot and captured the Torch Lady resting. Michael Saes used the other photos of Jenny to paint her. He would go on to say in a separate interview that, “meeting Jenny Joseph was providential; she’s a generous, gracious and timelessly beautiful lady. She had never modeled before, and never has since.”
