Today is the anniversary of the death of Louis XVI, and by a strange and sad coincidence, is also the day of the death of one of the claimants to the French throne, a descendant of Louis XVI’s cousin. HRH, Henri, Count of Paris, Duke of France (1933-2019), died today, aged 85. He was born in Belgium as the French Royal Family was forbidden to live in France at the time. His mother was the beautiful and legendary Isabelle of Orleans-Braganza, Countess of Paris, descendant from the Emperors of Brazil and from Marie-Antoinette’sister. Prince Henri was a descendant of kings Henri IV, Louis XIII, and Louis-Philippe, and was titled Count of Clermont by his father. He married HRH Marie-Therese, Duchess of Wurtemberg (later Duchess of Montpensier). This French-German royal wedding was very popular at the time, but it was not a fairytale. There was no love but the desire to reconciliate France and Germany after WWII and De Gaulle wanted this union. De Gaulle also promised that Prince Henri’s father would ascend the throne but De Gaulle changed his mind and this enraged him. Prince Henri’s father started to dilapidate his enormous wealth and giving all his chateaux (including Amboise) and priceless collections to a fundation. He wanted to make sure his son could not succeed where he had failed. Prince Henri later divorced and remarried to a woman he loved and who was titled Princesse de Joinville (and later Duchess of France). With his first wife he had two mentally retarded children, and a sometimes difficult relationship with his other children. Prince Henri found happiness with the Princesse de Joinville, his paintings and the books he wrote. May he rests in peace. His oldest son, Jean, Duke of Vendome is the new Count of Paris. O falecido era, por direito, e pela ótica dos monarquistas franceses, Sua Majestade o Rei Henri VII da França. E, por uma coincidência histórica, foi chamado por Deus Nosso Senhor a Si no mesmo dia em que, há 226 anos, em meio aos horrores e aos graves erros da Revolução Francesa, seu remoto antecessor e parente, o Rei Louis XVI da França, foi injustamente executado, não sem antes perdoar seus algozes. O Príncipe Dom Luiz de Orleans e Bragança, Chefe da Casa Imperial do Brasil, já foi informado do falecimento do Conde de Paris, seu primo em segundo grau, e, lamentando o ocorrido, deverá enviar mensagem de condolências ao Duque de Vendôme, filho e sucessor dinástico do falecido.
