Some early #Brutalism - the #McNichollHouse, #SouthYarra, by Grounds & Boyd. This is the side you mostly see in photo, I’ve always thought it looked like a block of flats, turns out to be the back, a stack of bedrooms, and it’s two storeys and gardens on the other side. Rather interesting but severe, vertical stacks of castle-like ins and outs, all in #concreteblock, very much a return to solidity after the structural experiments of the 50. Designed it seems in 1959 by #RoyGrounds, who did some more conc block houses in Canberra at the same time, but construction overseen by #RobinBoyd, c1962-3, about the time they fell out over the Arts Centre and Grounds left the partnership.
