Can you hear that giggle? This is Felix’s response to the story what his mum was telling us when the session started. Not so long before the session he was just told by one of his health-care professionals that four-point crawling is just too hard for him. At the same time we shouldn’t expect him to crawl or move his legs because he just can’t... and probably never will be. We don’t judge here but aim to educate the importance of understanding neuroscience: every single person is able to learn if there are high but realistic expectations that help to grow and develop. We do expect a lot, but also provide the support required for constant learning. Yes, it is hard work, but as we know, it always pays off. At the end, there is progress, increased confidence and a happy person who will try again. Please, please, please - don’t underestimate a child who might sit in a wheelchair and doesn’t perform for verbal instructions for the first attempt. Learning might be a slow process that requires belief in the children, patience from the teacher/therapist/trainer, consistency, discipline and lots of hard work. A month ago we were given the “reasonable target” of a year to get Dottie walking unaided. Today she took her first steps- proud doesn’t quite cover it. Thanks to the remarkable work of her conductive education classes @sticknstep, her conductor Becca, a lot of physio, practice and the security of Iggle Piggle. Yesterday we attended Small Steps, Small Steps is a free service and as a registered charity they do not receive any statutory funding. At Small Steps, pre-school children work on all areas of their development, using the principles of conductive education.  Children attending Small Steps sessions have cerebral palsy, other forms of motor impairment, syndromes or sensory impairment. It’s absolutely wonderful to have charities like Small steps to help Sebastian with his development! CONDUCTIVE EDUCATION Lilac has been so incredibly fortunate to have had a place at Megan Baker House since January 2017. We lucked out for the second time when the team moved literally hell and high water to ensure that Lilac was able to continue accessing CE when her rehabilitation schedule became a logistical nightmare. CE both pre and post SDR is proving to be an invaluable approach for Lilac and I expect that it will only increase in its value as she continues along her journey to full and functional independence. CE is a holistic educational movement approach which provides coping mechanisms and techniques to allow children (and adults) like alolaf to manage to difficulties caused by their disability. The impact that CE has on Lilac and the rest of our family’s life extends beyond just the physical. It helps to increase her confidence, which is vital for Lilac right now as it is one of her biggest hurdles to overcome. It ups her levels of motivation, which is essential as we ride this ongoing rollercoaster. It helps develop personality (erm...so is this the root of her sassiness?!?) and it gives her an overall sense of positivity about her future and her ability to lead an independent life. The skills that Lilac is acquiring at CE support her in being as independent as possible in environments. In our experience, the main benefit of CE is that supports Lilac in her learning of how to overcome the challenges caused by her neurological condition. Very early on when she was first diagnosed, her brain was pretty much written off by the Neurologist. CE supports what became our very basic understanding of the brain - that through learning, with a level of cognitive ability, requiring to bypass some of the damaged pathways can happen. CE compliments Lilac’s wider rehabilitation and ongoing therapy needs by looking to facilitate her individual aims and pushing her to keep building up to the next level of development. Having access to the wonderful team of experts at Megan Baker House is a joy for Lilac. Joining her session this morning was my absolute pleasure.
