Stress and anxiety seem to have become almost endemic to life in modern society. This kind of mental exhaustion can take a toll not only on the mind and the spirit, but also on the →physical body.←
There’s a strong connection between our mental health and our physical well-being. Over a prolonged period, stress can lead to weakened immunity, hormone imbalances, increased blood pressure, digestive disorders, and heart disease...
When we turn to our doctors for answers or advice, oftentimes we’re prescribed medications to treat the symptoms we experience. But these medications don’t solve the fundamental problem, they merely mask the outward expression of the imbalance we’re experiencing within.
Committing to a consistent meditation practice can help combat stress and anxiety at the source, thereby reducing negative physical effects. Here are a few simple exercises that can help, whether you’re a regular practitioner or new to meditation and not quite sure how or where to begin.
Square Breathing
Inhale as you count to four, hold as you count to four, exhale as you count to four, and hold as you count to four. This controlled breathing can calm the nervous system and regulate the body’s reaction to stress.
Nature Walk
Spending time outside is great for your health, grounding you to the earth and helping to provide much needed perspective. Focus on the experience of each of the senses as you immerse yourself in nature.
Dance It Out
Despite popular belief, mindful moments don’t just happen when you’re sitting in lotus position; they can happen when you are in any joyful flow activity.
Gratitude Practice
Taking time to acknowledge what you have (rather than dwell on what you don’t) can be a powerful way to shift perspective - and bring you more of what you enjoy.

Conscious breathing can be one of the most spiritual experiences, where you can exist in your purest form and experience consciousness existing outside of your own body.

We so easily take breathing for granted. A fully automatic process, beginning at birth and continuing without interruption until the day that we die, breath typically flows as a fully unconscious process—we have no need to in any way consciously attend to our breathing. Just as we can expect to breathe quite adequately while sleeping each night, so can we expect our breathing to continue without consciously doing it. Breath will continue through the deepest and most unconscious of human sleep.
Of course, our hearts also beat continuously without any conscious effort, and we digest our food without actually doing anything about it. From moment to moment a myriad of vital processes occur in our bodies and continue throughout our lives, of which we generally have no conscious awareness. This shows the wonderful design of living creatures: an innate, subconscious intelligence governs most of the workings of the body, freeing conscious awareness for other pursuits.
With the breath, however, we discover something of great importance. While breathing can remain a completely unconscious process, it also can quite easily become a conscious, intentional practice. That is, while respiration, along with most of our bodily processes, must function continuously—and thus unconsciously—one can also consciously influence and control the flow of breath. This unique quality of the breath makes it a link between the conscious and unconscious aspects of our being.
You can stop your breathing now for several moments, if you want to. You can resume breathing deeply now, if you want to. You can fill your lungs completely with breath, or breathe very lightly, or let the air out in a gentle sigh, or blow it out in a strong wind, all because you want to—it moves according to your conscious control.

Do you have a meditation practice?
For the past two months I've been consistently adding meditation into my daily practice and I can't emphasize how much I'm liking it.
Of course, I'm saying meditation but honestly it's more like a few minutes (10 to be exact) that I'm taking in the morning and again at night to just breathe consciously.
I put a timer on The Breathing App, created by @eddiestern, and observe my breathe in resonance.
.
What is resonant breathing?
I didn't know anything about it before either but if you read up on it it's basically a way to balance out the parasympathetic and sympathetic branches of our nervous system. It has a whole long list of real-time benefits for the body, but one of the most important is that it takes us out of fight or flight mode, easing down the go, go, go hyperactive state that our mind typically operates at. This allows both body and mind to calm down, reset, and feel okay as opposed to feeling constantly overwhelmed.
.
In under two months I already feel a weight lifted off of me. On more than one occasion I have literally caught myself reacting differently - more calm and equanimous - in situations that would have before bothered or really gotten to me.
In general I don't feel as anxious, my mind isn't racing as much, and while meditation isn't the only change I've been making to my habits, I'd even say I'm sleeping a little bit better too.
.
I really can't recommend enough taking even just a few minutes out of your day to sit with your own breath. .
This isn't an ad, I'm just saying what is working for me, but the breathing app is nice too because it's free, straight forward, and doesn't ask for weird permissions to access the rest of your phone - contacts location, photos, etc. - so no one is tracking you and your use of it.
.
I'll leave this for another post altogether but I've honestly even felt less inclined to be on Instagram recently too. Being able to calm my racing mind and slow myself down has me seeing that this app (IG) - while useful for many things - is also another contribution to my mental overdrive, consistently speeding me up.

Feliz weekend’ing, friends!

Your breathing is a stable, solid ground where you can take refuge. No matter what thoughts, emotions, and perceptions are going on inside you, your breath is always there, like a faithful friend. Whenever you're carried away by thinking, overwhelmed by strong emotions, or feeling restless and dispersed, return to your breathing. Bring body and mind together and anchor your mind. Become aware of the air coming in and going out of your body. With awareness of the breath, our breathing naturally becomes light, calm and peaceful. At any time of the day or night, whether you're walking, driving, working in the garden, or sitting at the computer, you can return to the peaceful refuge of your own breath.- Thich Nhat Hanh.
