Don’t be fooled by my ditsy photo edit! Today is EARTH DAY Back in December 2017 I wrote a blog post on www.sashdujour.com (linked) about the devastating effects of the industrialised manufacturing of clothing on our planet. Please don’t get me wrong. I’m a *very* long way from perfect when it comes to my purchasing habits & despite my best efforts am still very much a ‘consumer’. I love clothes & use style as my purest form Of expression. This post is certainly NOT meant to hector or shame. I’m trying my best to make changes. We all can. Whether it’s not buying that cheap £6 cotton tank top from a supermarket (at that price, someone, somewhere down the supply chain is getting a raw deal & I can’t live with that on my conscience, plus will it even last?) to avoiding polyester & nylon fabrics (disastrous on so many levels from emissions of nitrous oxides in their production to their microfibres ending up in our oceans - see my article for more info). I buy pre used & vintage much more now if i want a certain look. I’ve always sought quality, a good fit & design & want things to last. It’s worth paying a bit more for that in the long run don’t you think? Supporting new & emerging boutique designers for just a little more spend. Thinking more about the ethics of a company, their supply chains, transparency of working practices especially if their clothing is made in poorer developing countries, what they give back, who makes your clothes It’s all worth it & we have the power as consumers to investigate & invest in these more ‘values led’ businesses. Of course the business of fashion is a darn complex thing, involving long, convoluted global supply chains at all stages of production - so all of the above might not be as straightforward as we think. There’s an endless list of thank you’s for the guidance and belief that people have provided me over the years to enable this moment to happen. What started as an idea from @visslasurf & @surfrider 2017 #creatorscontest has enveloped my life to help inspire and address more ocean stewardship through functional surfboards made from people’s careless habits - #littered #plastic #cigarette #butts. This journey has proven to me the power of collaboration to solve problems, and that we can use our imagination to break barriers and preconceived beliefs. At the same time, this project has also taken me to some very dark places. I’ve witnessed first-hand the death and destruction caused to our #planet and #wildlife as a result of single-use plastic and our #consumer #lifestyle. Its raised some very deep questions in my mind about how these actions are affecting us now and in our future. What does a #polluted #ocean and #world mean for all of us? Why have we done this to ourselves? What can be done to fix it? I’ve realized that ignorance is truly bliss, and that ignorance is the source of the problems and why they persist. But it doesn’t have to be this way. This project has opened many doors and inspired me that change is possible. I feel certain it’s my duty as a world citizen to share this journey (@thecigarettesurfboard) in which @juddyproductions and I are working to capture the awesome work people have accomplished and are now doing to protect our oceans. We set out on this journey as two average surfers concerned about the environmental destruction caused by our single-use plastic culture, and trying to understand the extent of #solutions. But we’ve learned much more. We don’t have all the answers, but for sure, we’ve asked a lot of questions and had a lot of insightful conversations. Our film will enlighten people on these subjects and create a framework of various solutions, alternative thinking and a way to get involved if they choose. And oh yeah, we’re gunna have a full quiver of ciggy boards as surfers and surf of all kinds glide and slide on these boards around the world in search for answers about what can be done to #safeguard and #protect our seas.
