Some diatom species form stalks to attach to surfaces such as rocks or submerged organisms. These cells I found have attached themselves to a copepod . . The stalks function to hold the cells in place and are resistant to waves. The stalks are also believed to help the diatoms obtain nutrients from the water . . Humans mostly see these diatoms as a pest. When found in large amounts they can form thick mats known as ‘rock snot’ (that brown slime you see on rocks) and can cause fouling on objects . . I think these freeloaders look pretty awesome

Parasitic copepod Caligus elongatus (female with the egg sacks) from Helgoland, North Sea. From wiki: ”A sea louse (plural sea lice), not to be confused with sea fleas, is a member of a family of copepods (small crustaceans) within the order Siphonostomatoida, family Caligidae.” When I was diving at Helgoland, I observed many of those hanging in a water column and waiting for their fish. They feed on the fish mucous and epithelial layers causing irritation and stress. Copepods, like the one pictured here, are microscopic aquatic #crustaceans that can be found in both #freshwater and #marine environments worldwide. There are thousands of species of copepods described and they are one of the most abundant multi-cellular animals in the ocean - possibly one of the most numerous animals on Earth. Pretty much anywhere there is water, there are probably copepods too as they live in a wide range of habitats, from puddles of #rainwater to the waters of #PugetSound and beyond. This specimen was found near East Passage in the Central Basin of Puget Sound last summer. Copepods are notoriously difficult to identify because of the sheer number of possibilities and today we need your help! Does anyone recognize this elegant marine #copepod? This fish is a juvenile Scrawled Filefish (Aluterus scriptus). The fish is camouflaged for hiding out in the sargassum near the surface and feeding on the zooplankton that rises from the deep at night. Adults (slide 2) are often found on our local reefs. If you look closely you can see parasitic copepods on the tail (slide 3.) I believe they are Lepeophtheirus sp. also known to fish farmers as sea lice. The species may be L. pectoralis , since the mature females are found on the fins.
