One of the biggest perks of being an entrepreneur is that you can make a large part of your lifestyle deduction—and as a I shared last week, that includes “business vacations.”
-
But what is required from a documentation standpoint, and how do you calculate how much is deductible of that trip? Let’s discuss that today (it’s a thorough breakdown, so make sure to read the entire post).
-
First, how business travel deductions work is this: You take the number of days with business activity on the trip and divide that into your total days (not counting travel days to and from).
-
That is the business percent of the trip. If business percent is over 50%, then all of the flight is deductible; if it’s under 50% then none of the flight is.
-
Regarding hotel and meals, the deductible portion of those expenses would be based on the total business percent.
-
Second, you must keep an activity log of what your business activities are each day. Some examples of log activities could include:
-
Business planning session agendas (if it’s an annual retreat trip).
-
A list of prospective clients you visited in the area.
-
A list of office locations you visited to determine the viability of opening an office location in the city you are visiting (I.e., we have looked into opening a second Kauai office so clients vacations there would be deductible while visiting their CPA).
-
As long as there is business activity for a reasonable amount of time each day, that counts as a business day. I will let you be the judge on what counts as “reasonable,” as there is no set definition.
-
The key is, if you are going to deduct your business trips and it has a potential appearance that it’s just a personal trip—you want to make sure your documentation is strong.
-
Now tag an associate you want to travel with and go book some business trips!
One of the greatest ways (in my experience) to grow your business, and also level up your life, is to join business groups of like-minded, hard-charging people.
It helps you level up and the people you meet hold you accountable to a higher standard.
In the groups I’ve joined, I’m often surprised at how many people fail to deduct the group dues against their business income!
If an event or group is used for the purpose of making business connections or growing your skills, then it is definitely deductible.
As always with these types of easy-to-miss deductions, make sure to pay those dues from your business bank account.
If you are in a mastermind and/or business group, tag their account and some of the key connections you’ve made through the group!

Why to lackeys always aim at Cap’s shield and never at his legs, other arm or that big honking A on his forehead?

Team-up or face-off? You never know which to expect when the Hulk’s involved!
I’d originally added two chunks of this sprawling story as ‘Assault on Alcatraz’ and ‘The Monster and the Machine’. But I did a little extra research and discovered how far-reaching it really was! THE CORPORATION might not be the greatest saga in Marvel history, but it showed how to run relatively subtle threads through multiple books to underpin a shared universe.

Today I have a story for you. Last summer my wife and I took our family up to Lake Tahoe for a fun summer trip.
As you may know, I typically rise pretty early in the morning--but on vacation sometimes you just want to sleep in!
Unfortunately, 4-year-olds do not understand the concept of vacation. And at the time, my daughter was consistently waking up at 4:30am. Bright and early, indeed.
On one particular morning of the trip she woke me up and wanted to take a walk at sunrise. As much as I wanted to hit the snooze button, I dragged myself out of bed and walked with her.
That morning the sunrise was spectacular. And if I had hit the snooze button on my daughter’s call for a walk I would have missed it.
It got me thinking: if we hit the snooze button on the important things in life, we often miss out.
When it comes to business owners I’ve met, way too many of them have hit the snooze button on getting their books in order and doing proper tax planning.
If this is you, I strongly encourage you to make a change! Handling those two things results in so much more to your bottom line, which frees you up to do the things that matter to you!
Leave a ♂ in the comments if this is you, and you are committed to taking action on cleaning up your books this year!

“When can I start deducting expenses for my rental that I just purchased? Do I have to have a tenant first?”
Just got this question in my DMs that I thought would bring value to a lot of you!
You can start taking depreciation and deduct other rental-related expenses (ie, place it in service) on the day it is AVAILABLE for rent, not the day you get a tenant in the place!
This means that if you get the place ready, put up a rental ad on October 1, but don’t get someone in the house until January 1, you can still take 3 months of depreciation, interest, taxes, etc.
Tag someone who needs to know this!
