The unstable matter/antimatter pairs would annihilate away when the Universe cooled below the temperature necessary to spontaneously produce them. Eventually, we were left with just a small amount of matter, which was somehow produced in excess over the antimatter. As the temperatures continued to cool, nuclear fusion would occur between the protons and neutrons, giving rise to heavier elements. Although it took a significant amount of time between three and four minutes (a lifetime in the early Universe) for the formation of deuterium, the first step (one proton and one neutron make a deuteron) in all nuclear chain reactions, to stably occur, once it does we wind up with significant amounts of helium in addition to hydrogen, as well as trace amounts of lithium. The first heavy elements in the Universe are formed here, amidst a sea of neutrinos, photons, and ionized electrons. Now, it takes energies on the order of many MeV to fuse light elements into heavier ones, but if you want to form neutral atoms? You need your energies to drop below just a few eV (or electron-Volts), about a factor of a million lower in temperature. Forming neutral atoms is incredibly important if you want to see what’s going on, because no matter how much light you have, if you’ve got a whole bunch of dense, free electrons floating around, that light is going to scatter off of those electrons via a process known as Thomson (or, for high energies, Compton) scattering. The “microwave” background drops into the radio portion of the spectrum, as the photon densities drop from around 411-per-cubic-centimeter to tens, to single digits, all the way down to millionths of today’s density. In the quantum Universe, everything is both a particle and a wave simultaneously, where many of its exact properties cannot be perfectly known. The more you try and pin down a particle’s position, you destroy information about its momentum, and vice versa. If the particle is unstable, the duration of its lifetime will affect how well you’re able to know its mass or intrinsic energy.And if the particle has an intrinsic spin to it, measuring its spin in one direction destroys all the information you could know about how it’s spinning in the other directions.If you measure it at one particular moment in time, information about its future properties cannot be known to arbitrary accuracy, even if the laws governing it are completely understood. In the quantum Universe, many physical properties have a fundamental, inherent uncertainty to them. The quantum rules that govern the Universe are more complex than just the counterintuitive parts, like Heisenberg uncertainty. We know that there’s a fundamental uncertainty inherent to certain properties ( positions, momentum, Energy) of quantum particles, and we can only describe them fully by using probability. What this means is that if you take a single quantum particle, place it down at any one location, and ask “where is it now?” at some later time, you won’t find it simply by multiplying its speed by the amount of time that’s passed.The quantum nature of this particle means that its position is defined by a wavefunction, and that’s not well-determined.We can only give you the probabilities of where you might find it. Although we do not know how to calculate the value of this energy density from first principles, we can calculate the effects it has on the expanding Universe. As your Universe expands, every form of energy that exists within it contributes to not only how your Universe expands, but how that expansion rate changes over time. From multiple independent lines of evidence including the Universe’s large-scale structure, the cosmic microwave background, and distant supernovae we have been able to determine how much energy is inherent to space itself.This form of energy is what we presently call dark energy, and it’s responsible for the observed accelerated expansion of the Universe. Although it’s been a part of our conceptions of reality for more than two decades now, we don’t fully understand its true nature.
