I love the way Sherry White directed this scene from her film Crackie. Shot in Newfoundland and starring Mary Walsh and Meghan Greeley as grandmother and granddaughter. Between them comes their mother/daughter and a small mutt known as a "crackle" in Newfoundland. It was a moving film that too few people saw. When we met Burin at the SPCA She was on her last days there. She was sassy and crafty, danced on her hind legs, and suckered my husband completely. So we left with two dogs. ‘Crackie’ is a Newfoundland name for a small noisy mutt. * She spent around 9 years as a high energy major domo with a herding dog’s instincts. She’s even tried herding cownose rays in the shallows of the Chesapeake Bay.The last two years she’s slowed down. She’s got around 5% body fat no matter how richly we feed her. She wears sweaters in the winter. She’s old and grumpy and loves to snuggle up in a warm blanket. She still likes hunting, but hasn’t bagged a squirrel in years. Wednesday is her gotcha date anniversary. 11 years. That day she bit me, then we engaged in a 20 minute battle of wills before she conceded my supremacy. She’s my Pretty Princess Crackie Cakes. * She loved me pregnant. Couldn’t get enough of laying on my belly. But when I left and spent 7 weeks in another city (while the boys were in the Nicu) she froze me out for months. MONTHS. She knows how to hold a grudge. She’s more gray than black these days. And a softer, gentler, hell hound.
