Just a few of the countless things that make the Northern California Coast one of my favorite places in the world:
1. Scoliopus bigelovii, or California fetid adderstongue is an awesome looking little plant. Somehow I’ve always missed seeing it in bloom until this year! You can imagine my surprise as I pulled off of highway 1 to pee, only to find a hillside covered in hundreds of these!
2. Black trumpets, but to me they’re more like black flowers. Stumbling upon big bouquets of these in the woods is a pretty magical feeling. (Craterellus cornucopioides)
3. (Craterellus cornucopioides)
4. Corallorhiza maculata var. immaculata- First time seeing this for me!
5. Pacific trillium (Trillium ovatum)
6. My first blooming Calypso bulbosa in CA!
7. Yellow-foot chanterelle (Craterellus tubaeformis) next to western rattlesnake plantain (Goodyera oblongifolia)
8. Pacific coralroot (Corallorhiza mertensiana)
And best of all, these were all within about 100 yards of each other!
Winter in California and the mushrooms are popping. #mushrooms #theresmagicoutthere #mycology #hericiumcoralloides #craterellustubaeformis #craterelluscornucopioides #clitocybenuda #laccariaamethystina #lactariusrufulus #tibouchinaurvilleana #wildfoodlove #january #winterincalifornia #foraged #foragedmushrooms #happyhappyhappy #mushroomphotography #chanterelles

Craterellus tubaeformis - trattkantarell
Tid för trattkantareller i södra Småland! ❤️ Perfekt att slänga i en näve eller tre när man gör en riktigt höstig gryta eller bara smörsteka och ha på mackan hur brukar ni använda dem?

Foraging for winter chanterelles has got to be one of my favourite Christmas activities. The most winties I’ve ever seen. Swipe for some cuties and abundance shots. The last photo is an unidentified frozen “noodle” mushroom. It was so long!
So far we’ve split up the bounty and added our share to soups and omelettes, and made simple syrup and infused vodka for cocktails. Thanks @agaricusaugustus for the vodka tip several years ago!
Also feeling very grateful that we escaped the Squamish snow for a few days. I’m such a snow wuss! ❄️ #winterchanterelles #yellowfoot #craterellustubaeformis #foraging #mushroomforaging #sunshinecoast #wildmushrooms
Catching up on the mushroom prep - hen of the woods, winter chanterelle, girolle and hedgehog fungus - all heading for the freezer.

Craterellus tubaeformis, Yellow foot/Winter chanterelle. These delicious little morsels tend to grow later in the season, usually early winter to early spring. They’re a very tasty edible that usually grows in scattered to large troops, making up for their relatively small size. Yellowfoots, like other chanterelles, have vein like ridges instead of traditional gills, which are usually a lighter color than the cap or stipe; pinkish gray like these. The cap often has a little depression in the center, especially with age and is typically a yellowish brown color. The Yellowfoot name comes from the bright yellow stipes that these mushrooms have, which is often irregularly shaped and always hollow inside. These mushrooms have whitish spore prints. You can find them growing in duff and moss in coniferous forests, these were growing in a stand of Douglas Fir. These mushrooms do not grow directly out of logs! There is a look alike called Chrysomphalina chrysophylla that sometimes looks very similar to these, it has even tricked me quite a few times. The two main differences are that Yellowfoots do not grow directly out of wood, and they have ridges, not gills, which are a pale color compared to the top of the cap. The look alike is of unknown edibility, so make sure you know what you have before putting things in your mouth ! Once you know what to look for, these are very safe, abundant, and delicious. They are also typically very clean compared to regular chanterelles that are often full of dirt and pine needles. I’ve also found these growing right next to and around hedgehog mushrooms very frequently, so keep your eyes out for these delicious winter edibles! #chanterelles #craterellustubaeformis #mushrooms #fungi #fungus #shroomstagram #mycology #ediblemushrooms #medicinalmushrooms #naturalfood #foraging #naturalmedicine #forestfood #mushroomsociety #youfungus #spores #mushlove #mushroomhunting # #nature #mushroomseason #mushroomidentification #education #fungifreaks #fungusamongus #shrooms
