Photo by @esterderoij | I decided to spend a few days camping on a remote beach off of the west coast of BC after a friend told me about some potential wolf activity around. It was a long stretch, and I didn’t think it through too much other than my survival requirements and safety precautions. How I would locate them I would see when I got there. When I landed I scouted out a good location for my tent and decided to have an initial sweep of my beach. There were wolf footprints everywhere! It didn’t take me long to realise I, by total fluke, had found myself not far from a site frequently used by wolves - not just any wolves but 4 young wolf pups, and I could use my tent as a hide. One evening they decided I was worth checking out so they very cautiously approached me from multiple angles, alert and curious. They got bored of me soon enough, and after a minute or two decided to head back to their regular spot until mum or dad called to say dinner was ready. I was so elated the moment felt too short and incredibly long all at the same time. It was a rare moment of intimacy I feel privileged to have experienced. It was also the only time in my week there the wolves decided I was worth checking out, and the closest I’d ever get to them. For the rest of my time I’d only ever catch brief glimpses of the adults or the whole family together and the sound of howling in the forest, until they decided to relocate somewhere else. The beach after felt empty, as if it was missing something as important as the sand. I don't know about you but when it's 30 degrees or more out it's hard for me to hike. I naturally run warm as it is so I pretty much feel like I'm suffocating when I hike in the heat. So I'm thankful for my kayak and all of the beautiful spots we can go to to cool off! This was last nights sunset at Crescent beach! Unreal! Looking forward to some cooler temperatures coming up so I can get back out on those mountains. #lowermainlandhikers
