It’s been 3 years since I had the idea of Voilà Valet, and what a learning experience it has been! Presenting at the Austin Startup Crawl really put my journey into perspective. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Initially, my idea was to offer an app/platform to get to know your hotel house keeper with mobile tip capabilities. Was this a good idea? Would people use it? How do I know these answers before putting time and money into development? Well, I did something probably most people wouldn’t do. I signed up to be a hotel housekeeper…because what better way to learn my users?! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ After flipping many mattresses, scrubbing dirty toilets, and washing sheets in a dark basement, I realized my idea simply wasn’t feasible. I walked away deflated, yet fiery. This idea must work in another industry, right? And what about the hours and hours I wasted looking at photos of Toucans...? Yes, toucans. I wanted to call the app “Toucan Tip”. It was time to pivot. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A few days later, I had a subpar valet experience, and I noticed an opportunity in the valet parking industry. I proceeded to talk to valets, to work as a valet driver, and to learn all about the industry. What started as a simple tipping app has now turned into a full-blown software and data tracking solution. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And then, most recently, I partnered with @nextlevelvalet. Now, I’m drinking out of a fire house yet again. Strategic partners can really lead to eye-opening experiences. Starting a company? Find someone experienced in that industry and listen to their problems. Dig deeper and have empathy, because they will tell you everything you need to know. The amount I’ve learned in the past month with a strategic partnership has exceeded the amount I learned in the past 3 years alone. And guess what? We may be pivoting again. This time, to an employee management solution. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Cheers to many more pivots and learning experiences! What’s your story? ⬇️⬇️
