While spending the weekend at Alenquer we went to the Damião de Góis and the Victims of the Inquisition Museum. A friend and student of Erasmus, Damião de Góis was an important Portuguese humanist philosopher and one of the most critical spirits of his age. He travelled intensely, entering into contact with a number of important figures, like Thomas More, Martin Luther or Philipp Melanchthon. An humanist and an open mind, Góis followed courses at the Universities of Padua and Leuven, wrote on various topics, like the condition of the Sami people, compiled one of the first accounts on Ethiopian Christianity, translated some classic latin works and published a translation of the Biblical book Ecclesiastes. He was also a composer of some musical pieces and kept a private collection of paintings. He was widely attacked by the powers of the time, specially the Catholic Church, and leading noble families, for being such a free mind. In 1571 Góis faced the charges of the Inquisition. He was was sentenced to imprisonment for life for crimes of heresy and apostasy by the Holy Office Court. Abandoned by his family and having lost all his possessions, he was released by the Inquisition, some years later, only because his condition was so bad, they thought he could be leprous. He was found dead one year later, possibly assassinated. Nothing threatens a corrupt system more than a free mind, the very canvas of infinite horizons.
