130 years ago today, on 13th April 1889, Frederick John Kempster was born. As an adult he became well-known as the 'British Giant' with various reports putting his height as between 7ft 9 ins and 8ft 2 ins. He needed size 22 1/2 boots and such were the size of his fingers that an old penny coin could pass comfortably through his signet ring. This photo shows him with his mother.
He toured the country on his own and as a circus act. For a while, he lived at Seend, Wiltshire from where he used Great Western Railway trains. A request was made to the company to allow him to travel in a special chair in the guard's van. His overnight accommodation consisted of three beds placed side by side so he could sleep across them.
In August 1914 on a declaration of war he was working in a circus in Germany and was held as a prisoner for a month before being released. He then became an innkeeper but his health declined: he passed away in April 1918. #DayofHistory #DidcotRailwayCentre
