Resharing this post I did during the Thanksgiving holiday time as it still stands true •••••••••••••••••• Did you know that the holiday season can be one of the most isolating times of the year for many deaf/hoh individuals ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Attending gatherings that consist of primarily hearing family members and friends (many of which who do not sign) can cause feelings of isolation and segregation. Often times, hearing family members might not realize how inaccessible these gatherings are for their deaf/hoh relatives. A million conversations happening at once across the dinner table... it’s impossible to keep up! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For those who know me, they might not realize how holiday times can be stressful for me. (Being that I speak well and benefit from my auditory equipment.) However, because of this, family and friends assume I’m following along just fine and often forget how hard I must work to keep up. While I do enjoy the holidays, they’re EXHAUSTING for me! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Oh and please, STOP saying “I’ll tell you later” or “It’s not important” to your deaf/hoh friends or family members. It’s insulting and degrading. As if we’re not deemed worthy of knowing why everyone was just hysterically laughing.
