Danger in the suburbs! I took this picture of this unremarkable gate last week in my village-like quiet Sydney suburb. I parked my car 50m down the road & sauntered over, choosing my shots for about 5 minutes. It’s opposite a council depot & the workers were just clocking off for the day. Feeling strangely that I was attracting attention, I finished quickly & made my way back to my car. I heard heavy running footsteps behind me & slowed down so he could pass me but he stopped. Not someone I knew, he looked me up & down & was struggling to say what was obviously on his mind. I had no idea what was going on. ‘So why are you taking pictures of my gate?’ Sheesh, no one’s ever challenged me before. I smile at him & tell him it’s just about aesthetics, that I like taking pictures of ordinary landscape. He’s not convinced, the council guys had called him to say that someone was casing the joint & he has a lot of expensive tools in his workshop. I pulled out my phone & show him some pics telling him that they’re just shitty pics of nothing in particular & assure him that I’m harmless. I might have even called him dude! He tells me that these days you just have to be extra careful which is odd because I’m in my neighborhood doing what I like to do & I always feel safe.
