Representing for #InternationalWheelchairDay ! I've been using a wheelchair part-time for the last 6 years. The biggest hurdle has not been related to me or my disability, but to society's perception of what it means to be a wheelchair user. I am not "wheelchair bound" I am not "confined to a wheelchair" I am not "handicapped" All of these phrases and mindsets are archaic, as well as just plain wrong. Without my wheelchair, I would be severely limited in where I could go in day-to-day life, as well as what I could accomplish. My wheelchair, like with any other disabled person who uses assistive technology, represents freedom. It gives me the ability to do more than I ever could on two legs with my current diagnosis. It is not a burden, or a curse. This doesn't mean I don't still experience hardships-- I do. But these are not because of my chair, they are the result of a society, a system, a world that doesn't value disabled people & their lives. Whether confronting barriers on a structural level, or attitudinal, I will continue to fight for equal access. I actually looked fancy for my appointment today! Ooooo! Then came home and crawled back into bed. It was good while it lasted though. It was a lovely Thanksgiving vacation. Back to work today. I am feeling more refreshed. I'm worked on getting back into my hobbies. Work exhausts me, so every day I find myself just mindlessly scrolling, which is okay sometimes. I am very hard on myself when I'm not productive though...even when I'm in bad pain. Drew and I talked it out last night after we calmed down a pain flare. We discussed prevention, pacing, motivation, possible hobbies...all things I already know. All things I needed to hear again. Because I've been doing almost nothing for months now. After work, I sit on the couch. I scroll Facebook. I scroll Instagram. I scroll Reddit. I scroll my Google news feed. I cycle them continuously. I feel unsatisfied. I feel unconnected with myself. This isn't me. I'm productive. I'm an artist. I enjoy cleaning. I scrapbook. I garden. I make jewelry. I write poems and stories. I play keyboard. Where is that person? I've been lost for so long. I feel like pain has stolen me. But, I can't let that continue. My pain isn't going anywhere. I've learned to adjust in so many ways, but it's still here. I can't just wither away. It's all so much easier said than done. These are words on a screen. When I'm writhing and crying, unable to find words, like last night, and Drew looks to me with his exasperated helpless green sympathetic eyes, all I can do is wait and hope this severe pain isn't forever. And, when it passes, maybe I'll appreciate my time no matter what I do. I need to recognize my worth beyond my productivity. . .
