Since being in Peru I have had no problem learning about different psychedelics from guides and villagers. They spoke of Ayahuasca with pride as it is one of Peru’s main claims to fame; outside of its amazing jungle, Machu Pichu, and Lima. Finding Banisteriopsis Caapi (Ayahuasca Cielo: native), though, is not as easy. The biggest difficulty was finding a shaman who performs the ceremony, and knew where to find it. The Peruvians I met were hesitant to even admit they believed in spirits of the forest for one, and two that they even had a village shaman. The reason being is that the Catholic and Evangelic church have invested a lot of time and money into many villages; so plant medicines, even for the common cold, were kept quite... I don’t have enough room to explain how we met Walter, but we did, and before he would show me anything he wanted to make sure I had a pure spirit. We took a canoe no more than 30 minutes down the amazon to an animal trail, and then hiked for two hours to get out of the Agape forest, or flooded forest. My Spanish is not the best, but from what I understood, Walters’ father-in-law used to live in the area we stopped at. Walter learned to perform the duties of a Shaman from his father-in-law after his military service for Peru, and the vines we were cutting through were on the grounds of an old Ayahuasca plantation. We searched for about an hour and a half with no results. I was bummed out, but I understood that we were very close to the time frame before some friends came searching for us… so sadly we started our hike back. In the background my guide Lander was explaining to Walter that he has seen more animals with me than any other tourist…meaning that the forest accepts me. Walter was impressed with my determination to find Banisteriopsis Caapi, and also my spirit (a group of Tamarin monkey came close to us in the old plantation, and some rare river otters swam up to our canoe on the way our). In Spanish, Walter said to my guide something along the lines of, “yes, I will show him”. I then realized that all of our conversation wasn’t ‘guy talk’, he needed to know certain aspects about me. {more in comments}
