In the city of Newburgh, NY, along the Hudson River an hour outside New York City, 37% of the population lives below the poverty line. In 2011 New York Magazine called “Newburgh the Murder Capital of New York”. But more recently the city, like many impoverished and majority black and brown cities in the past few years, has had to contend with the threat of toxic chemicals poisoning their water supply as state and federal governments play politics and push blame. // // // I spent the day in Newburgh last month with @alexanderckaufman for @huffpost.
Today is my last day in Pakistan after working here for three years with UNICEF. It's been an incredibly fascinating experience, full of memories I will treasure. Working to improve the lives of the children of Pakistan has been incredibly fulfilling - hoping Pakistan's young generation will continue to survive and thrive.
