Ostia Antica, the ancient port-town of Rome. This is a recreation of one of the oldest intact "thermopolium" (or "popina", the Latin term for a kind of diner or fast-food joint for slaves, dock workers and other laborers). And the business of the insula of The Termopolium of Via Diana was two fold, to serve the Ostiensi food and possibly lodging upstairs. The first two photos are recreations (I bought for my 11 year old niece!) that help visualize what it looked like 1700 years ago. These fast-food diners were common in ancient Roman cities, just as popular as they today. The 3rd photo is of the exterior of the place as it stands today, showing the three entrances and the stone braces that were used to support the upstairs balcony. (That little architectural detail would be picked up later by Medieval architects.) The 4th and 5th photos show the middle entrance with the actual fast-food counter where you could pick up a quick bite and move on. There were two areas to actually sit down as well, one inside and one outside in a coutyard. The 6th photo is a still life over a counter with a possible brazier underneath to keep the counter warm, acting like a warming table (or not! The verdict is still out on that!). The still-life advertises that this particular place serves food, drink and possible entertainment (represented by the general-consensus identified musical instruments on the right). The 7th photo is of a wine/oil/water "dolium". This enormous ceramic container was permanent alimentary storage, buried in the ground - for possible thermal control?
