TGI...Monday evening!
The trick (for me anyhow) to being happily productive is to have cycles of productivity with solid, true breaks.
Work hard, but not so hard and so long that you’re too cracked and have to take a longer time off to function well again. This is something that works on both a micro (hourly, daily) as well as a macro level (monthly, yearly) for me. When I work, I WORK, but when I need to take a break, whether mentally or physically (usually mentally more than physically!), then I take my break happily and 100% guilt free. I know if I rest when I need it, I can work harder and happier later (and usually get far more done in an astonishingly shorter period of time).

This is actually a lesson I learned in my early years of grad school (thankfully before my Ph.D.!). I always think back to this time I wrote an actually extremely good 17 page paper on marginal annotations in a medieval manuscript in one sitting. I had all my notes and outline prepared, so I just went for it, even if this final paper wasn’t due for another week or so. I camped out at a booth in LaFortune (aka “LaFun” ), Notre Dame’s student center, and basically typed that baby out for 6 or 7 STRAIGHT hours WITHOUT STOPPING. Afterwards I had to take 3 straight days off because my brain felt like it had possibly melted! (I think I actually just went to the mall the next day and walked around for “recovery”!) So, while I marvel at first-semester-of-grad-school-self for pumping out that paper (my professor wanted me to publish it), I learned early on here to be smarter about not unduly torturing my noggin...you don’t want to work so hard that the only thing you can do the next day is go to the mall! Though, on a positive note, at least I was smart enough to try not to work!
Incorporate mini breaks into your day, your week, and bigger breaks into your year, and you’ll end up working smarter and faster so...you have more natural breaks anyhow! I love my work, probably because I love my breaks!

20.38 miles (7:57 pace, 2:42:08 total) for my last big long run before Grandma’s Marathon! Nice and consistent even with the heat, and my friend Rachel kept me company for the first 10 miles! Much warmer than my other long runs, where I lucked out and got 50s and light rain: today was in the 70s, but that’s still a lot cooler than what I’ve been running in lately! I was really happy that I was able to actually pick it up a bit over the last 10 even with running those alone—generally I feel like it’s always easier to keep whatever pace you’ve got if you’ve also got company! Felt really good at the end, especially compared to past training cycles, which bodes well for the race itself.
During the run, I had two GUs, alternated between Roctane Summit Tea and Maurten, and then opted for some grapefruit orange nuun at the end there as I was just super thirsty! Ended up drinking all 4 of my mini water bottles (probably 10 fl oz each) plus my two bigger spare bottles (22 fl oz each) by the time I was in my car, and then stopped at Wegman’s for more drinks (where I killed a protein smoothie right there while shopping ...also notice the lemon iced tea shown here). Brunched with Phillip after his long bike ride today, and now time to chill and soak up Sunday afternoon.
For this training cycle, I’ve now got three 20+ mile runs, two 18+, four 15+, a whole month of 60+ miles, and way more 10-14 mile runs than I’ve managed in the past. (I ran my 2:48 at CIM off a 16 and 17 miler!) Now just to keep calm and carry on until June 22!

Ok, if you could have ANY beverage waiting for you at your next finish line, what would it be? During the last 3 miles of this morning's longer run, I decided my top 3 would be:
1️⃣. iced tea lemonade, otherwise known as "half and half" or an Arnold Palmer. Side note: I may be turning into my dad, haha.
2️⃣. iced tea (made with black tea, unsweet, with lots of nice little ice cubes and a lemon).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3️⃣. chilled grapefruit orange nuun.
A close fourth place is actual lemonade, which is the only of these beverages that I’ve named that I’ve actually had at a real life finish line: after 13 miles, that was the most beautiful, clutch lemonade of my life. (Looking above I think I’ve got a citrus/caffeine theme going!) Do you do any races with stand out drinks or food at the end? This morning on my run, I was actually just really happy thinking about my tea waiting in the fridge!
Here I am, #postrace this past Monday with a drink in each hand, with my orange Gatorade and water!
