The golden temple is the most holy place in India for Sikh people. It is amazing to see all the people come here to pray. They take baths in the lake and stand hours in the line to enter the golden temple.
♥
Not so fun is that we are both feeling sick. We think that the bad air quality is one of the causes. But luckily we are on our way to the mountains. Hopefully some fresh air will do us good.

A Frankish pattern-welded sword on display at @nationaal_militair_museum
Many weapons in what is generally called the Early-Medieval period had pattern welding in their cores. It served for strengthening the metal. The forging process had a religious side to it. Because it took a very special way of folding the metals, the smith was sometimes considered to have magical abilities. The patterns created in the metal are mentioned in some mythological texts, as well. The contrasting colorations in the cores were compared to waves, snakes, flames and teeth. Mentions like this are found in Beowulf. A theory exists of the Vikings adding bones of sacred animals like bears, boar and wolves to the metal in the heating process. This was arguably a religious element to make the blade spiritually stronger. But, without their knowledge, ‘accidentally’ made a rudimentary form of steel, making the blade more durable because of the added carbon in the mix. To get an idea how clear the pattern really was (surprisingly clear), I included a photo from the book Woden’s Warriors by P. Mortimer. To read more about swords I recommend looking up the works of Mortimer & Bunker, Nørgård Jørgensen, Westphal and Mäder.
