Living the #dyelife is hard. Really hard. Physically, mentally, socially. It can be very isolating working as a production artist, and most of us are one-person shows. A lot of us are suffering silently. Price increases and supply issues due to tariffs are squeezing our businesses. Tax policy does us no favors. Large companies infringe on our intellectual property without a second thought (designers suffer too). Some of us also are wrestling with social justice and sustainability issues that affect all textile-related businesses. We all need help in different ways. .
.
Sometimes it's just simple (but big) hurdles like sheer amounts of cash money, equipment, websites, shipping, organization, vendor networks, staff, accounting and legal help. .
.
But sometimes artists just need to be seen and know that we're supported and not alone. I have never and will never believe that I am in competition with my fellow makers. There is more than enough room for all of us. Not everyone sees it this way, that's on them. I see a lot of struggle right now. We need to lift each other up. .
.
Help the newbies, celebrate their store openings, cross promote others' updates, buy from other dyers, appreciate those who have been doing this a long time, drop random love bomb comments, give that follow back. 95% of people are hustling and scratching their way through, just like you.
.
But who do *you* go to? You can't admit weakness in front of your customers. God forbid you give the "jackals" on forums any show of fear. You friends and family can only identify so much. You need anonymity without exposure to hurtful, demeaning comments. Open forums are helpful for lurking, but not much else. I see this need, I have felt this solitude deeply for many years.
.
So, I will be opening up my stories on a regular basis to chat confidentially and take questions and comments from fellow makers, aspiring makers, and everyone else. I can only give you my point of view, but if it's helpful, great. If you don't like it, and you don't think I'm giving value, please feel free to mute my stories.
.
This Valentine's Day, give out some love. Everyone could really use some right now. Including you! ❤️
When I say "dyed by the piece" this is what I mean. Its about intentionality when I create. Every piece is hand dyed after cutting, and not from pre-dyed felt. Why? Because I am a dyer. I love colour... choosing colours, finding just the right dye(s) at just the right amount & temperature to create the colours I envision. That magic moment when the piece is transformed! For me, that a piece is hand dyed is a central part of its creation-- it's colour is not incidental, it reflects the vision and tells the story . Dyeing by the piece gives me creative control over the finished item, and ensures a one of a kind piece of fiber art made with intention & passion.
