Yes! Your Words Matter including
- “you need to focus” (ADHD) - “very lazy” ( for swimming) - “doesn’t try hard enough” (anxiety) - “not listening” (Auditory Processing) - “writes sloppy” - (Dysgraphia) - “she’s 10 and can’t spell?” (Dyslexia) - “not motivated”(teaching style?) Like all human beings, children want to do things they are “good at”. Let them SPARK in their own strengths and interests. Give them an opportunity.
Do you know your students?
Is there a particular interest they have? Can you reach them in a DIFFERENT WAY?
Do you know their favorite colors or extra curricular activities.
Try - What’s in a name? Great resource for getting to know students. Thanks @weareteachers

Never feel bad about advocating for your child.
Whether it's with their doctor, their teacher, or their coach.
And, know that this doctor understands.
You know your child the best. I only get a small 15 minute glimpse into their symptoms and behavior. If you have a feeling that something is wrong - speak up! You are your child's best advocate. But, that should always be measured with acknowledgement of your doctor's training and education. If you don't feel comfortable with a decision, explore it and make sure your doctor can fully explain it to you, so that you are on the same page.
I recently found myself in this position with one of my children in the classroom. Even when the teachers, my husband, and even my own child psychiatrist mother thought nothing was out of the ordinary, I persevered. Because I just had that feeling in my gut. And, I was able to get a diagnosis and a plan for my child. You know your child the best. And, I will always respect that.

This helpful infographic shows how dyslexia can affect MANY different academic skills. (I would also add a bubble for #speechandlanguage indicators like trouble with articulation, expressive language, verb tense, and #phonologicalawareness.) Many of these have nothing to do with reading and can be observed as early as preschool! Dyslexic brains have different neural connections, so dyslexia represents an overall thinking pattern, not just a reading problem. How many of the listed behaviors does your child have? Has your child’s dyslexia changed over time?

Is stationery addiction a thing? Having working memory issues means I always need to try and be super organised. Being organised doesn’t have to be boring and @kikki.k @typoshop and @kmartaus are my favourite places to buy stationery. Just be careful you don’t end up spending all your pocket money there! #kikkik #kikkikplanner #typoshop #kmartaustralia #dyslexia #dyslexiaawareness #dysgraphia #learningdisabilities #learningdifferences #workingmemoryissues #stationery #stationerylove #stationeryaddict #backtoschool #pocketmoney #cutestationery #dyslexiamemes @teachqld for the image
