The drying-up of Lake Aculeo in Chile This time series, made up of images taken by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite between February 2016 and March 2019, show the gradual disappearance of Lake Aculeo near Santiago de Chile due to a persistent drought and overconsumption of water. The satellite images allowed scientists to track the water surface extent at high frequency, making it possible to observe the lake’s declining water level until it fully faded in December 2018. Density variations in the crust and upper mantle Scientists are putting together a new global model of Earth's lithosphere and upper mantle by combining gravity anomalies, geoid height and gravity gradients complemented with seismic, thermal and rock information. The new results, based on a paper published recently in Geophysical Journal International, were presented at last week’s Living Planet Symposium. The animation above is a sample of the new 3D Earth models that are due to be released in 2020. Crop circles in Saudi Arabia This Copernicus Sentinel-2A false colour satellite image shows how Saudi Arabia’s desert is being used for agriculture. The perfect circles are due to a central-pivot irrigation system, where the long water pipe rotates around a well at the centre. El Salvador seen from space Today, the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission takes us over El Salvador with this false-colour image highlighting the country’s vegetation in red. The smallest and most densely populated country in Central America, El Salvador sits on the eastern edge of the Pacific Ring of Fire, and is home to no less than 25 volcanoes. The Cerro Verde National Park, seen in the lower left of the image, is over 2000 metres above sea level and includes a cluster of three volcanoes surrounded by lush rainforest. Santa Ana, the highest volcano in the country, is clearly visible with its circular peak.
