Nightlife in the shadow of a stratovolcano.
This is Mount Fuji, Japan's symmetrical, snow-capped, dormant stratovolcano. Located on Japan's main island (Honshū), it is the highest volcano in Japan at 12,389 ft (3,776 m) tall, making it the 2nd highest island peak in Asia, and the 7th highest island peak in the world. It last erupted in 1707-1708, and is snowcapped for about 5 months in the Winter and early Spring. It towers out against the rest of the landscape, and can be seen for like a in every direction on a clear day.
Mount Fuji is one of Japan's "Three Holy Mountains" alongside Mount Tate and Mount Haku. The stratovolcano became a UNESCO World Heritage Site on June 22, 2013 with 25 recognized sites of cultural interest within the surrounding area including the mountain, shrines, temples, and more. If you get a chance, we highly recommend exploring Mount Fuji on Google Earth. The scale of this mountain is hard to appreciate without a frame of reference or other objects to put it's size in relative terms.

Face-to-face with the ghost of the Arctic.

@benjaminhardman: An unforgettable moment at the edge of the fast ice. Two Polar bears had been playing together at the waters edge, a mating couple we soon learned. Leading up to this image, the female had fallen into the water as the ice cracked beneath her, the male soon followed. They were diving down to fetch some kelp from the seabed beneath, and bringing it up to investigate. Soon after, the female bear looked towards our zodiac, swimming nearer as I captured the scene at 500mm. We swiftly gained some distance, and left them to continue their ways.

Polar bears are sometimes nicknamed the ghosts of the Arctic. This is partly because their white coats help them blend in against the snowy landscape, and they can use this to ambush prey. However, they are also disappearing. Their icy homes are shrinking, and their prey sources are also dwindling. Polar bears have begun to move South to warmer places in search of food, and have been mating with other species (specifically brown bears like grizzlies). This means that seeing a polar bear is becoming rare, and is almost like seeing a ghost. There is also an increasingly likelihood that they will disappear in our lifetime, when they will truly be ghosts and only exist in books, videos, and our memory.
