One series I really loved was the Wool series by Hugh Howey (Shift is the 2nd in the series). I recommend that to people and now my son is reading it. The Adoration of Jenna Fox is another that I really liked. I just got Waking Gods in the mail today...just in time because I'm ready to start a new book! Today at school I hosted a Poem in Your Pocket Day. Kids could take a poem out to recess to share and so many kids were excited to take theirs home to share with family. Well, hello May! Last month I didn't make a TBR and I loved it! This month I have a MBR...May Be Read...since it's May... I've had Scythe for over a year and I really want to get into it. Only Human is the 3rd in a series I'm reading. I'm doing traditional stories with my students this month and talking about different versions (my older students will write newfangled versions!) so I want to read Encircled. You Guys! Janssen Bradshaw @everydayreading and @hadleydesigns FREE summer reading chart is soooo good. I’m going to print out giant ones (easy to do at Staples as an engineering print) and hang them in the basement where we have a lot of wall space. I can already see my little girls using them to play school and filling endless summer days with the creative suggestions—that I didn’t have to come up with #momwin There are also ways to customize your printable so it’s smaller if that works better for you. These would be perfect for summer reading library programs or for teachers to send home with students for the summer. Did I mention that it’s FREE! Proud to announce we have won the national Ezra Jack Keats Foundation mini grant! This allows us to extend social/emotional project materials to our at-risk and low income students over the summer. It's especially meaningful because Keats is a hero of ours -- beloved for breaking the color barrier in children's literature back in 1962 with The Snowy Day. He believed all children should be able to see themselves in the books they loved. "If we could see each other exactly as the other is, this would be a different world." What an honor!!!!

I’m attending the inspiring ALA Midwinter Conference this weekend in Seattle, and I wanted to share books by four of the incredible authors I’ve met. Kevin McCloskey was promoting books from his Giggle and Learn series, and I picked up Snails are Just my Speed! for my elementary students. The book is a playful blend of interesting facts (snails like to eat together, are both male and female, and can repair their shells with mucus glue) and lively and sometimes silly illustrations. Kids will laugh while learning--perfect for young readers who like a graphic novel format. Last week I was surprised with the news that I had been chosen by my peers in my school district as Educator of the Year. My initial inner response shocked me, and I felt anxious for most of the week. I am trying to allow myself to feel happy and honored & to push the doubts out of my mind... I think that, as educators, we are not seeking the spotlight, so when we find ourselves there it doesn’t feel right. I’ve decided to embrace this as another opportunity for personal growth!
