Most of us were not taught how to navigate conflict growing up. And often the template we received involved a major breakdown of relationship when disagreements or differences came to the fore, rather than a strengthening of it.

Conflict, esp with those we are closest with, is often overwhelming to the nervous system. It’s triggering. Both because it’s inherently stressful and because most of us have a lifetime of bad experiences where conflict didn’t end well.

These are great ideas of what to do when we start to feel overwhelmed during a heated conversation with our partner.

The reason I like this list so much is because it demonstrates that it’s possible to maintain our own integrity and take care of our needs while simultaneously being respectful of our partner and our relationship.

I was thinking about the act of public apology, by politicians especially, and how performative it always feels to me - which is reinforced shortly thereafter because they almost always repeat their behaviors immediately after the apology. Then, while I was stitching this, I was watching @deadtome (highly recommend) and there are these absolutely brilliant micro-moments between one of the lead ladies and her ex fiancé. Basically it goes:
Man does something aggressive or abusive to ex
Woman says “hey don’t do that”
Man apologizes
Woman says it’s ok
Repeat.
But it’s done with total brilliance and is meant to offer a moment of comedic relief but also demonstrate their patterns of trauma. Apologies are such funny things. So many of them exist as performance, as habit, as reaction. But a real apology starts with words and is only completed through action. That’s my ramble for the morning. Happy Sunday!

Gentle reminder:
Setting boundaries does not make you less kind, compassionate, empathetic, loving, understanding, or connected. Boundaries are what allow you to *actually* practice these things from a genuine, authentic place. Setting boundaries is an incredible act of compassion for yourself and for others. It took me a very long time to truly believe and embody this truth, but now I know it's the only way I can show up fully in my life. And, as always, it's an ongoing practice.

You don’t have to look too far or too deep to find critical info predicting the future health of any potential partnership.
You simply need to look at how each person commits and follows through with themselves. It tells you everything.
I see a lot of people out in the world claiming they want partnership and saying with complete conviction that they’re ready for it, without really knowing what it takes to make partnership work.
These are the same people who people please, self-abandon, fail to follow through on small promises they make to themselves- which for the record these behaviours actually erode connection and prevent partnership.
If you can’t even trust you to follow through you sure as shit won’t be able to trust someone else to follow through in their ability to stay.
If you self-reject non-stop it’s going to be hella difficult to believe that someone loves and chooses all of who you are.
If you can’t tell your honest truth (without being mean), you’ll constantly be on edge wondering if others are actually being straight up and honest with you.
Until you learn you can rely on you, you’ll have a real hard time believing someone wants to stick around. If you don’t even want to stick around with you and follow through, it shapes how you see people.
How you “see” or filter someone influences how you interact with them. Which means you might mis-filter based on our own internal bias (your relationship to you that you projected onto them). So, to clean the line of sight, get to work exploring the roots of your self-abandon (which is what a lack of follow through is all about). This will lead you into some shadow work, and into the heart of your love and relational blueprint.
It’s also worth noting that when we have chronic habits of self-abandoning with our own follow through with ourselves we tend to attract in AND be attracted to people who are unavailable on some level.
When you refuse to meet the part of you that is sabotaging your follow through, it is often mirrored through people who can’t be fully available to you either.
