"Maybe part of our formal education should be training in empathy. Imagine how different the world would be if, in fact, that were 'reading, writing, arithmetic, empathy.'" - Neil deGrasse Tyson : Warm moment captured at @maplebearrp, Brazil. #Empathy #EducationForABetterWorld

Several years ago I had an experience where someone did something pretty awful to me. . When I was telling my therapist the story she asked, “are you angry?” and I said “no, I’m just upset”. . She said “why do you always do that?” . I said “what”? . She said “whenever something happens to you that would make any other person feel angry you tell me that you’re just upset” . “Because, I don’t like anger. I don’t get angry at people.” . As we continued the conversation, she gently pointed out to me that of course I feel anger. Everyone does. I just had a very black and white understanding of what anger looks like. In my head anger was associated with the behavior of out of control aggression. And, I didn’t like that. . I learned something important that day. . It was my aha moment. . I want to share it with you. We all have ALL of the feelings. . They do not need to result in undesirable behaviors. . Yesterday, someone asked me “what if I have a feeling towards a boundary that someone sets?” . My answer to that question is “then you feel it”. . You can feel any feeling at any time. There is no right or wrong feeling. Feelings are just feelings. We have them in response to experiences that stir something inside of us. Behaviors? We get to learn to choose those. . We have mostly unconscious behavioral responses to those feelings or unconscious beliefs about those feelings. Journaling, talking to a therapist, and building awareness helps you learn to become aware of your responses. . This also means that you can hold people accountable for their behaviors. You don’t need to excuse them - “they were just angry so it’s okay” or “they’ve been sad”. You can empathize with the feeling but it’s not on you to excuse poor behavior. Especially, if it’s harmful to you. . I’m pretty good at saying “I’m angry” now because I know it’s an acceptable feeling. I’m also better at holding people accountable. Feelings aren’t behaviors. .

Aligned Blend:⁣ ⁣ Do you question if you are on the right track? Are you searching for some guidance and confirmation perhaps? ⁣ ⁣ I’ve jumped into a bunch of unknowns recently, which can be unsettling. Thankfully, our family welcomes the unfamiliar. Change and evolutions requires stepping into the unknown. ⁣ ⁣ However, instead of random unknowns....I’ve always trusted that there is a path for my highest good. ⁣ ⁣ This blend has helped to provide awareness towards which next steps to take. Inner knowing rises, and the “should I’s” disappear. ⁣ ⁣ Be brave, take risks, shake things up! Let’s just make sure we are taking the right risks for you. Our decisions must be aligned with our soul. ⁣ ⁣ 5ml⁣ ⁣ 7 Pink Pepper ⁣ 5 Siberian Fir⁣ 3 Fennel⁣ 2 Lavender ⁣ ⁣ Fill the rest with Fractionated Coconut Oil. Apply around the belly button, heart and temples. Apply 1-2x a day for 1 week initially. And then you can revisit this blend at anytime you need it. ⁣ ⁣ Pink Pepper and Siberian Fir together opens the heart to divine guidance and quiets the ego. They especially shut off the voice that talks us out of things that are good for us. ⁣ Fennel and Lavender create a deep connection with our soul’s truth. They act as the compass for our mind and heart to align with our true north.

Hey Excellence Addiction Team! I've got a short story based on an interaction I had yesterday. Yesterday someone asked me about why I believe that understanding our emotions is so important for balanced living. This was one of the reasons I gave him. I believe that if we aren't in touch with our own emotions, then not only will we lack an understanding of ourselves, but we will lack an understanding of others as well. Without a certain level of emotional intelligence we isolate ourselves from achieving pure connections with those around us. It's something I feel we all could work on a little more. I think the world would be a better place if we did. If you truly want to have an impact on people you need to be able to understand how they feel. Hope you all have a great day! Stay excellent! Mark

"We are neurologically and culturally conditioned to think that all of our intelligence can be measured with an IQ test. Our culture relies too much on people with high IQs and GPAs and those with degrees from elite schools who can do complex math problems in their heads. We distrust those who we judge rely too much on their intuition or feelings. You will become wiser when you begin to view the head, heart and gut intelligences operating as equally important, interrelated software programs versus three separate modes. This perspective allows you greater access to the full gifts of your creativity, insight and judgment." Source: https://www.playmakerlife.com/mma/2018/11/1/did-you-know-that-you-have-3-brains

These words from the brilliant @drsuejohnson, founder of Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT), deeply impacted the way I work and do case conceptualization. I’ve worked with so many relationships who end up deciding to stay together after a relational norm violation/s (e.g., #affair #infidelity #betrayal)—it makes so much sense to me. Once they know how to repair and find their way home to each other, the emotional disconnection fades away and conflict becomes a productive means to deeper connection instead of a destructive force. Escalated fights and ‘affairs’ are symptoms of a lack of emotional attunement and repairs, even though our culture moralizes and tries to blame character flaws. Sure, there are some cases where people rushed into an incompatible relationship and lack of attunement is probably to do with irreconcilable differences, but at least in my office, it’s more often a case of compatible people out of attunement and not sure how to get it back. Good news: there’s a map to this territory and we can navigate it with #EFT! #suejohnson #quotestagram #emotionaliq #quotes #emotionallyfocusedtherapy #affairrecovery #infidelityrecovery #emotionalintelligence

I’m been to therapy three times and I’m not at all shy to talk about it. . I initially sought out therapy for support in dealing with the death of my father and simultaneously accepting adulthood, working in a corporate environment after college. . The second time because I needed guidance on how to tame my mind from consistently thinking about the future, which brought anxiety and impatience to my present. . The third time because I felt lost in a new city dealing with my worst year in sales & experiencing a ton of daily challenges at work. . Talking about these challenges allowed me to relieve myself of the pressure I was applying and gave me the gift of alternative perspectives to consider. . Additionally, each experience I had in therapy had a positive effect on my identity, which is why I look back on past sessions as self-defining moments in life. . If I didn’t talk about these problems, I doubt I’d be the person I am today. . During all these times, I also called my friend @retrodro for life counseling and additional perspective. . Hands down, @retrodro is the FIRST person I call when I’m going through life’s challenges. .
