Although I pretty much know my winters (cold, dark and scheduled ), my summers feel a bit like I have an empty bowl in my hands and the freedom to fill it with whatever I like. I can open the map and choose a Greek island to visit, discover new beaches to swim at, collect stones and minerals from new cliffs, shells and sand...be out there close to nature and feel warm and alive again. Trimming of an ‘Empty Bowl’. As promised, here is another part of the process in making the bowls for the ‘Empty Bowls Project’; the trimming. The freshly thrown bowls were left to harden to the leather-hard stage (see previous throwing post); which is the perfect time to turn them upside down and trim away the excess clay. The video makes this look so fast, but in essence it is very time consuming (I only wish I could trim that fast in real life!) I am using the ‘Giffin Grip’ to hold the bowls on the wheel; it is a very old version of this wonderful product and I don’t have all the parts that make it extra special, but it still works amazingly well, especially for production pieces, like in this case, where all the bowls are relatively the same. These bowls are for the ‘Empty Bowls Project’, supporting FoodBank to feed the homeless, which will be held here in Perth on Sunday 23rd June, 2019 at Christ Church Grammar School.
