Four out of five new mothers will feel sad, frustrated, tearful, anxious, and overwhelmed in the first days and weeks after delivering a baby. These are the “baby blues” and this is completely NORMAL • Still, when having a child is supposed to be one of the happiest times, it can feel abnormal or even shameful to experience anything but joy. But again, we repeat: During the first days to weeks following delivery it is NORMAL to feel emotionally abnormal ‍♀️ • Equally as important to remember, is that non-birthing parents can also get the baby blues. And research shows s/he is more likely to have symptoms if his or her partner is experiencing them. • The good news is that the baby blues are temporary. Neither a condition nor a disorder, the baby blues are a reaction to the stress and hormonal changes surrounding childbirth, and your mood should improve in two weeks or so. However, that doesn’t mean you need to passively suffer through. Here are a couple of tips to help alleviate the baby blues: • Educate yourself – Learn about postpartum adjustment so you can normalize your experience and better identify when you may need professional help. Take the help – Force yourself to ask for and accept help. Give yourself space to let yourself heal and catch up on much-needed sleep. Seek support – Find a safe person or place to talk about your experience. Be patient with yourself and your partner – Remind yourself this is temporary, everyone is tired, and this isn’t your “new normal.” ‼️ Know when to get help – If you still feel “blue” after two weeks, or if the symptoms are getting worst, you may be experiencing a Postpartum Mood or Anxiety Disorder and it’s time to call your care provider or a clinician. Ideally, a professional that specializes in reproductive or maternal mental health. Our website or warmline is the perfect resource for that . . . : @brooklyn_rabbit . . . . . #postpartumhealthalliance #postpartum #PMADS #awareness #resouces #1in5 #postpartumanxiety #PPA #postpartumdepression #PPD #postpartumocd #postpartumptsd #postpartumpsychosis #realmotherhood #noshame #yourenotalone #motherhood #support #maternalmentalhealth #sandiego

Dear 1 in 5, • I see you. I know what it feels like to have those days that don’t seem to be worth fighting for. I know the range of emotions, the peaks and valleys. I know them all too well. I know the overwhelm, the darkness and despair, the moments of questioning yourself wondering what is wrong with me. Believe me when I say, you are not alone. • You are more than this battle you are fighting. You are worthy, friend. You are worthy of LOVE. You are worthy of SELF-CARE. You are worthy of HAPPINESS. You are worthy of KNOWING. You are worthy of RECOVERY. You are worthy of GRACE. You are worthy of RESPECT. YOU ARE WORTHY and you are STRONGER than this struggle. • Don’t believe the voice in your head that whispers lies to you. You may feel defeated during these trials but know your pain has a purpose and it’s only temporary. You...we WILL make it out on the other side. We can’t see it when we’re in the valley but we never know how we can be used to be a blessing or an encouragement to others down the road. • I truly believe that everything happens for a reason. God did not create us to live in a spirit of fear or chaos. He uses every moment and circumstance for something greater. Better days are coming, friend. • Hardships often prepare ordinary people for extraordinary destiny. C.S. Lewis. • Follow along with the rest of the #dear1in5 letters. Up next is @th3littlestavenger

Repping On Our Sleeves’ stickers in the place that laid the foundation of my healing ••• Tuesday I returned to @nationwidekids for the first time since I discharged from the YCSU 2.5 years ago. I walked the halls for the first time as someone other than a patient. I was there working on some exciting things for the On Our Sleeves Campaign and to share part of my story with the wonderful women from @thirtyone . ••• I got to tour mock rooms for the new behavioral health pavilion that’s opening in 2020, which was the most incredible and cathartic experience. ••• I was surrounded by people who have the most genuine hearts for children’s mental health. The women in this picture raised money for behavioral health research. They were so open and welcoming of my story and are so passionate about The On Our Sleeves movement and changing the way we talk about children’s mental health. Hearing about and seeing all the consideration that is going into making this new pavilion a warm and safe environment for children made my heart full beyond compare. The people at this hospital are people who helped save my life and the lives of countless others. This hospital is dedicated to helping and saving children and teens who are struggling, and I am so grateful for that. ••• Every time I share my story, another part of me is set free. It is healing and freeing, and one of the greatest acts of compassion I have ever had for my younger self. It is such an honor to speak of hope, help and healing, always. ••• #onoursleeves #thirtyonegifts

An exhausted me ft. a crooked septum ring. I'm still mentally and physically adjusting to my new schedule and job. I know it'll come with time. I'm making sure I have a wicked lunch each day, good music, and am mindful of everything I do and how I speak to others. I am grateful for everyone's assistance in my new environment. However, once I leave work, I am finding I collapse quite suddenly. I am fatigued, a bit grumpy, and irritable. So, I'm trying to figure out that whole work-life balance thing. How do you balance work and your relationships? . . . #mentalhealth #mentalillness #mentalwellness #1in5 #endstigma #depression #bipolar #ocd #bpd #anxiety #suicide #suicideprevention #dbt

✨ Mental Health Loop ✨ Let’s get real for a minute. Did you know that 1 in 5 people suffer from some type of mental illness? Did you know that 1 in 7 women suffer from postpartum depression? Up to 50% of individuals with PPD are never detected. Another fact most people probably don’t know...suicide accounts for about 20% of postpartum deaths and is the second most common cause of mortality in postpartum women. . I’ve always wanted to be vocal about my experience with this because it’s not talked about enough. It started for me after my second son. I dealt with the baby blues and that turned into postpartum depression and anxiety. I’ve struggled with it from that point to now since having my babies. . There’s a stigma in our culture that needs to be torn down about these topics. I didn’t know anything about this after having my first son. I had to really research since having symptoms after my second son to pinpoint what was happening to me. It wasn’t normal and no one talked about it. . 1 in 7 women, y’all!! The statistics are unbelievable. We can’t afford to be ignorant on this topic. If you’re struggling, mama, please know you’re not alone. Reach out for help. Whether that be someone you know locally, someone professionally or a friend on social media. There is hope even when you can’t see it. Know you are loved and worth it. Take care of yourself. . Those of you that don’t struggle with this, chances are if you have friends or family, which you do, then you know someone who deals with this. They may not appear like they’re struggling. They may act like they’re strong but internally, they’re weary. Reach out if you have that inkling or have clues that this person might need you. You never know what a blessing you might could be to someone. . If you’re #1in5, double tap this and drop a comment below! You've heard me talk about mental health a lot, and how I'm "1 in 5". I've struggled with anxiety disorders and PPD/PPA over the years. My first symptoms of panic were in fourth grade. • I'm so passionate about stopping the stigma and starting the conversation that surrounds mental health. I can't imagine where I'd be if the conversation had been more open so many years ago when I was new to the struggle. If you're 1 in 5 like me, please know these things tonight: You are not your diagnosis. There isn't a playbook. Every feeling you have is valid. You aren't broken. You aren't dramatic. You aren't crazy. • If Ussein Bolt breaks his leg, he's still the fastest man in the world... he just might be on the sidelines for a while, but his setback doesn't rob him of his greatness. • You're worth help. You deserve life and love and light. I'm here if you need an ear. #worldmentalhealthday #1in5 #ppa #ppd
