Wondering why Murphy is being fed in some weird upright chair? Well let me tell you! Murphy, a 1 year old FS MBD presented for further evaluation of regurgitation and episodes of choking. She also had a history of tiring easily while exercising ️‍♀️ . Chest x-rays showed that she had a MEGAESOPHAGUS (dilated esophagus) which was filled with food and fluid. There are many causes of megaesophagus in dogs including idiopathic (most common in acquired cases), polyneuropathy/polymyopathy, toxins (lead), esophagitis, lupus and myasthenia gravis. An association has also been found between megaesophagus and certain endocrine disorders (hypothyroidism, Addisons’s disease) . While some of these causes have specific treatments others do not. Supportive care is VERY important and feeding in ways to avoid regurgitation are . An upright chair (AKA BAILEY CHAIR) helps by using gravity to move food down the abnormal esophagus! . In Murphy’s case she tested positive for MYASTHENIA GRAVIS. This disease is caused by a breakdown of the transmission of impulses from the nerves to the muscles due to antibodies that bind the receptors (acetylcholine receptor antibodies). We are starting her on treatment with pyridostigmine (anticholinesterase) and antibiotics for pneumonia. . One of my favorite and one of our most amazing rescue stories. Rusty was found by a Good Samaritan at a Makapuu Lighthouse. He was in bad shape, having been attacked by a dog. Thanks to your donations, we were able to get him to a vet. The news was not good. He had a broken pelvis, so many breaks in his tail it was useless, a nasty upper respiratory infection, and two very large soft tissue wounds. He developed pneumonia, which required a one week hospital stay before he could even be operated on. The amazing staff at Waipahu Waikele Pet Hospital took sure great care of him and he was able to get his tail completely removed and the soft tissue injuries repaired. The surgeon opted to let his pelvis heal naturally. Due to the severity and location of his injuries, he was never expected to be able to control his bowel movements. We had to research possible mainland rescues who took in special needs cats. But, as Rusty was already a miracle cat, his miracles didn't stop with surviving such a brutal attack. Within 48 hours of release from the hospital, Rusty regained control of his bowels. Less than 7 months later and he is completely healed. He is the happiest boy, and although he has no tail, he can do everything a normal cat can do. He reminds us daily of how resilient cats are and how we can't give up on them even when the odds seem low. Rusty showed us a will to live every step of the way.
