In 1907, editors of the French newspaper Le Matin issued a challenge: Who would be daring enough to attempt to drive from Peking, China to Paris, France? This was a big challenge. Beyond the lack of mapping and limited communication back in those days, roads were few and cars were nothing like those that would exist later in the 20th century. Regardless, 5 teams would rise to the challenge and soon it became a race. The route started in China, in what is today Beijing, traveling through Mongolia, Russia, and into Eastern Europe before heading through Germany and returning to Paris, France. It totaled a long and very dangerous 8,700+ mi / 14,000+ km. By the end, 61 days after the start, an Italian team led by Prince Borghese driving an Itala claimed victory. To this day, the Peking to Paris race remains in the history books as one of the most grand, historic races of all time. But one piece of history from that race is still with us today. That is the red of Borghese’s Itala, which was adopted by Italy’s manufacturers as the nation’s racing color. Decades later, another Italian would make a name for himself in motor racing wearing red. That man’s name was Enzo Ferrari. Later, Ferrari would formally adopt the red most closely associated with Italian racing as their color. Ferrari would go on to become one of the most successful racing manufacturers of all time and in the process, this red would become intertwined in their DNA. This is the incredible history behind one of the most popular reds of all time, the red of an entire nation, a red whose name translates from Italian as “Racing Red”: Rosso Corsa.
