We see a lot of videos and tweets about red flags(=warning signs) for uncovering toxic people, before getting in trouble with them. It can often make us feel like it should be easy to see these red flags and we tend to blame ourselves for not noticing them, at least not early enough. The truth is that often the so called red flags just aren't visible at first. An experienced abuser knows how to hide their nasty habits just enough, and show fabricated 'green flags' to make the target feel safe with them. ‍♀️‍♂️ The abuse is often very subtle at first, and the abuser crosses our boundaries little by little so that we kinda get used to it and our mind starts sort of bending a little. This technique makes us vulnerable, we don't know what's real and what's not, who to trust, or what to do. ‍♀️‍♂️ At this point the abuser is already controlling us a lot and our sense of self is fragile, and asking for help and leaving the abuser is REALLY hard. ‍♂️‍♀️ HOWEVER there is always a way out. Trauma is inherently complicated. More often than not we feel shame and responsibility for what happened to us, even though it's absolutely not our fault. ‍♀️ The fact that the perpetrators often use gaslighting(manipulation, belittling etc) on the victims makes it even worse, we start to question our own experience and perception, even our sanity. it's so unfair to be made feel like the traumatic event 'wasn't really that bad' or that we somehow deserve it.‍♀️ We don't. I've said it before and I will never stop saying it: ABUSE IS NOT YOUR FAULT. Abuser's illness is NO excuse. Abuser's past is NO excuse. Too often people who have gone through a traumatic event start blaming themselves. "i should have fought back", "i should have seen the red flags" etc. The abuse you suffered wasn't your fault. Trauma, especially complex trauma, sadly affects people for the rest of their lives. The idea that someone has to be physically abused to be traumatized is absolutely not true. This stigma filled thought makes it even harder for trauma victims to seek out help. verbal abuse, gaslighting, threats, bullying, isolating, yelling, disappearing for days, substance abuse, neglect, spreading lies, belittling... the list could go on. These things can be devastating. especially when the victim is a child, but it affects adults too. If you are in an abusive relationship, I hope you can find a way to get out. This is a very good rule of thumb for spotting someone's triggers! Often people with ptsd/cptsd and other trauma related problems don't know all their triggers, some don't even know they have any! it's a tricky thing to understand our reactions because they are so automatic and we don't tend to think about them. It is very important to notice and take note of our behaviour when it feels a bit out of place. This is of course also useful for friends and family, and I want you to kindly ask the person seemingly over/under reacting if they are okay. Do they feel safe? Do they need space?
