Nurturing my emotional health changed my whole life—I now know it needs just as much support as the physical concepts of wellness that usually get all the attention.⠀ ⠀ Emotional intelligence is a vital part of finding true, long-lasting wellness. ⠀ ⠀ I always try to stress to my patients that our body’s systems work as a whole, not in divided pieces—this is the essence of Functional Medicine. The mind-body connection is a powerful one, with emotional health as a cornerstone in achieving full-body vibrance.⠀ ⠀ We’ve seen that a greater grasp on emotional understanding correlates to increased happiness and satisfaction, along with better management of stress, while a lack of emotional balance has been linked to poorer outcomes with physical health issues. ⠀ ⠀ It wasn’t until I found a way to accept and cope with them, that I was able to move on, more resilient against the unpleasant feelings that we’re all susceptible to at times. ⠀ ⠀ Luckily, we can grow our emotional intelligence and learn to manage our feelings in a graceful way.⠀ ⠀ We can do this by practicing active relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, talk therapy, and journaling. ⠀ ⠀ #emotionalhealth #activerelaxation #emotionalintelligence #health #drmarkhyman

Creative Recovery Day 22-40 ☮️ Your thoughts have real and measurable effects on your body and brain. Your immune cells know your deepest feelings.⠀ ⠀ Your stem cells are wired to your brain and help you repair and regenerate. But they only turn on and make new brain cells when you relax. And I don't mean sipping a glass of Chardonnay while watching TV or practicing retail therapy. ⠀ ⠀ In school, we all learned how to read and write, but we never learned how to use our minds to help us with the most important survival skills of all: staying happy and healthy! Research has shown over and over again that learning to relax is one of the most important keys to long-term health and vitality. ⠀ ⠀ To engage the powerful forces of the mind on the body, you must DO something. Learn how to ACTIVELY relax. ⠀ ⠀ Whether you practice deep breathing or take a simple leisurely walk, find an active relaxation that works for you and do it. Here are a few more ideas on how to push your pause button:⠀ ⠀ 1) Make choices that make your life balanced — practice saying “NO” to others and “YES” to yourself.⠀ ⠀ 2) Try yoga or meditation.⠀ ⠀ 3) Get enough sleep.⠀ ⠀ 4) Eat whole foods that decrease the stress response.⠀ ⠀ #stress #cells #activerelaxation #mindbodyconnection #drmarkhyman repost @drmarkhyman

Note: This does not apply to acts of violence, oppression, and chronic illness. There are genuine situations where people are truly dealing with stress that is life threatening and requires the help of a professional. ⁣ ⁣ Your mindset is your collection of attitudes—how you respond to challenges, express gratitude, manage your time, and take care of yourself are just some of the parts of your life that you can assess to get a better understanding of your mindset.⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ Our mindset is what brings it all together. ⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ We have to get in the right headspace to help ourselves stay healthy and reach our goals. ⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ You can try gaining control over you stress with these mind-body-spirit exercises:⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ - Introduce a creative hobby, like knitting, painting, or writing.⠀⁣ - Get moving! Yoga is a form of moving meditation, and can be easily found in your community or online.⠀⁣ - Try daily meditations. You can start slow, with 3 – 5 minutes a day, and access helpful apps like Calm.⠀⁣ - Body work like acupuncture is a great way to relax the body and ease the mind.⠀⁣ - Talk therapy offers enormous benefits. I’m a big fan of getting all the support you can during difficult times.⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ If your stress seems unmanageable, I suggest working with a functional medicine doctor to find the root cause. ⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ #stress #mindset #meditation #activerelaxation #drmarkhyman #mindbodyconnection

There is a dramatic and powerful connection between your mind and body, and between your body and your mind. In fact, it really should not be called a connection because it is just ONE bidirectional system.⠀ ⠀ Unfortunately, few doctors accept or understand this fundamental reality about biology. So, in most doctors’ offices, you aren’t going to learn about the connection between your body and brain or how to use that connection to help you heal.⠀ ⠀ Take stress for example. ⠀ ⠀ Stress is any real or imagined threat to your body or ego. ⠀ ⠀ While that might mean someone putting a gun to your head, it could also mean thinking your boss is mad at you (even when they aren’t).⠀ ⠀ Stress creates hormonal responses that cause weight gain and insulin resistance. ⠀ ⠀ Cortisol is an adrenal hormone that helps you to run faster, see further, hear better and pump fuel into your bloodstream for quick energy. It is the hormone that helps us survive in the face of true danger. It also shuts down digestion and slows your metabolism.⠀ ⠀ All of this is perfectly normal in the short term, yet if left unchecked, prolonged stress and high levels of cortisol cause high blood sugar, increased belly fat, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and muscle loss. ⠀ ⠀ You can’t eliminate stress completely, but you can reduce it with meditation, yoga or deep relaxation. These activities activate pathways that promote weight loss and health.⠀ ⠀ #stress #insulinresistance #activerelaxation #meditation #yoga #drmarkhyman

If there was something you could do every day to boost your focus and productivity, feel energized, reduce stress, sleep better, maintain a positive outlook, and support whole-body health, wouldn’t you do it?⠀ ⠀ It’s for all these reasons, and more, that I consider meditation a foundational pillar to good health. ⠀ ⠀ I used to think I didn’t have time for meditation but now I know I don’t have time NOT to do it—it’s become that integral in helping me manage all of my other many responsibilities and passions. Since starting, I’m happier than ever, have found the love of my life, and my business is rocking.⠀ ⠀ You can also try other active relaxation methods such as deep breathing, acupuncture, yoga, cooking, spending time with friends, or even by just going on a walk. ⠀ ⠀ #beingpresent #meditation #activerelaxation #brainhealth #drmarkhyman
