Because it did for me ----------------------------- By the time I was a junior in college I had failed out of 7 courses and my advisor told me I’d never make it in the medical field because I wasn’t smart enough ----------------------------- A year later I graduated college with an embarrassing 2.7 gpa, couldn’t apply to medical school and got rejected from an accelerated nursing program ----------------------------- I felt like a failure and the dumbest girl in the world. ----------------------------- But the one thing I wouldn’t allow was for anyone to set limits to what I could and couldn’t do. They don’t get to decide what becomes of the brilliance that lies inside of me. ----------------------------- After spending an entire summer researching, learning, testing every study skill out there and consistently applying the ones that worked, I got accepted into a nursing school with a 3.8 gpa and graduated with honors 2 years later ----------------------------- Whether you’re a first generation college student putting yourself through college or you’re returning back as an adult student, I’m here to help you reach the highest levels of your academic potential and harness that incredible intellect with in you ----------------------------- I’m not your boring college professor. I used to run away from academic exams when I was younger because of my fear of not being smart enough. My mum, sister and brother are all very academic and being the youngest, I decided I would take a different route to avoid comparison (not that anyone but myself would have compared - but my younger self didn’t realise this yet). I am glad I have approached life from an alternative angle but continuing to learn, grow and complete courses in my adult life has felt really important to me and I get irrationally over-excited by certificates. However, while studying as an adult, I realised that actually, I was always smart enough, I just hadn’t found out that my way of learning was a little different to the mainstream way. There are different modalities of learning kinaesthetically (through feeling), visually and auditory. We are taught in schools that we all need to learn through one modality (mainly auditory), leaving many kids feeling stupid and unable to learn. The truth is they just haven’t found out their individual learning style yet. I learn kinaesthetically, I need to feel things to hold onto them as knowledge, hence why I have chosen active careers. I need to physically say things out loud, feel them in my body or re-write things. Knowing this about myself has been a game changer for learning. I now feel excited at every opportunity I get to learn and share something new. Bring on the endless lessons that life has to offer. I can now jump in without fear of failure. I still get things wrong but being excited about the learning makes it all worth it. As a teacher, I am always happy to learn new ways in which to help students and our company's pedagogy crash course this week was perfect for that. • Although I've been teaching for a few years, I had never encountered many of the theories and concepts surrounding current pedagogy and it was an eye-opening and inspiring experience that made me hungry to learn even more. The session also confirmed what I've grown to believe: that being a teacher never gets easy or mundane. There is so much to improve and work on and there are so many courses to take and classrooms to observe. I am going to be learning to make PUPPETS. Yes. For I have booked on to a Pupettry Foundation Course. 10 weeks, starting in September. I wish to learn to make puppets (I've always loved them and been fascinated in their craft, movement, terror, ability to convey deep emotions with the crumpling of a fabric around some-well pivoted-wooden-knees etc) because I think it will help me be a better medical artist. I wish to be able to make puppets exploring patients concerns, and tracking the interplay between form and function in sickness and health.
