We are tremendously sad to hear that Agnès Varda has reached the end of her journey through a marvellous life in film. She had just premiered her latest self-portrait, Varda par Agnès, at last month’s Berlinale. Last year we put her on our cover for a special multi-writer special issue to celebrate her 90th birthday. ⠀ ⠀ On our website now, So Mayer pays tribute to an unstoppably playful radical, Agnès Varda channelled a war-swept childhood into the determination to cherish and honour the personal, the marginal and the vital. They begin:⠀ ⠀ “In the Saint Charles Chapel of the Papal Palace in Avignon, a woman with a distinctive bowl cut, dyed dark aubergine, is scattering bright pink roses and begonias beneath five-metre-high black-and-white photographs of the late greats of mid-century French theatre, reciting a litany of their names. The mourner is Agnès Varda, and the photographs are hers, from the early years of her friend Jean Vilar’s Avignon festival, blown up larger than life under her direction for a 2007 exhibition. We see a camera and boom operator recording her, documenting the great documenteur (as she titled one of her most bittersweet films) as she further turns her life in art into an art of life for this scene in her 2008 biodoc, The Beaches of Agnès.⠀ ⠀ “Beaches is one of the fullest accounts of a full life given by any filmmaker, and it is hard to say more about Varda than, ever honest, reflective and playful, she said about herself; that film is now joined by Varda par Agnès (2018) (sharing its title with her 1994 catalogue raisonée published by Cahiers du Cinéma, ranging across her thoughts alphabetically), which will now be her final film. A cineasta belga Agnès Varda, rara voz feminina no cinema e precursora da Nouvelle Vague, morreu hoje aos 90 anos, em consequência de um câncer. Sentimos muito, mas ela deixa um grande legado para a história do cinema e a participação das mulheres no audiovisual. Nascida em 30 de maio de 1928 na Bélgica, quando tinha 34 anos lançou o filme "Cléo 5 a 7". Foi o início de uma carreira de filmes elogiados, incluindo "Uma Canta, a Outra Não" (1977) e o documentário "Os catadores e eu". Em 2017, em "Olhares, Lugares", viajou pelo interior da França em uma van, com o artista @JR, trocando ideias sobra a arte e a vida (foto em destaque). Em 2017, foi homenageada com um Oscar por toda a sua carreira, onde defendeu o trabalho independente, longe das restrições financeiras dos blockbusters de Hollywood. "E eu tive muitas vidas. Fui fotógrafa. Fui cineasta. E, depois, uma jovem artista contemporânea aos 72 anos. Gosto muito dessa terceira parte de minha vida, que me permitiu tentar outros encontros, noutros lugares, criar outras relações com os espectadores.
