Propagation station update! It's been exactly 1 month since I put this baby maker into action. All test tubes are still standing and the water in each is clear and free of murkiness.⠀ ⠀ There was some concern when I posted my DIY video (on feed) of this propagation station of how I was going to change the water since they are hot glued to this plastic wall that I have in my plant studio. I've been propagating for a long time and I've become familiar with plant cuttings that do not make the water murky. The tubes are also directly under a skylight so I think the evaporation rate has something to do with the water not getting messy. There was also concern of how often I would have to refill the tubes with water. This is my second refill in 1 month. Not bad, eh!? Peperomia propagation! These are one of my FAVE plants to grow in water, mostly because they grow those super cute little leaves under water. . Want to try yourself? Here’s some tips: ✂️ Peperomias can be propagated from stem, leaf & tip cuttings. To propagate from a stem, snip anywhere along it (with enough length for it to be able to sit in water) and submerge the end in a vessel filled with water. Check google for tips on other methods - today I’m focusing on stem propagation Leave your cutting in medium to bright indirect light, and change the water once a fortnight or when it goes murky ⏰ Be patient with these guys. It takes around a month for the first sign of roots, and longer for leaves to grow. These images were taken after 4.5 months ➕ You can add seasol or rooting powder to the water to speed up the process Propagation is a game of chance. Not every cutting will take so take multiples to increase your chance of success. Rotting does not equal failure. It’s just Mother Nature doing her thang. Some people find letting the end of a cut stem dry for a day increases the chance of roots. I’ve not found this to be the case but it doesn’t hurt to try These guys can’t live long term in water - the longest I’ve had one in water was 5 months before it started to rot. Transplant them to soil when this happens (or sooner) They’re ready for soil once their roots are a few cm long. Bury the roots in soil (use a small pot) & leave the mother leaf and baby leaves on top. You can use a toothpick for support. The mother leaf will eventually die off once all its nutrients have been delivered to the new growth. You can snip it off when this happens Leave the planted cutting in medium/bright indirect light, and somewhere warm & humid.
