This soft stone mold for casting lead shot was just found in excavations close to the site of the 18th Century blacksmith. Enslaved artisans, such as blacksmiths, were highly skilled in a multitude of metal working. The blacksmith at Montpelier was known to have cast copper alloy bells, and make repairs to variety of objects, in addition to the production of nails, tools, and other hardware. I picked these up because of their hand-pointedness, this mosaic of delft, westerwald and slip. They were very fine once, and now they’re broken. Stained in places, and here and there glaze has chipped away. The same could be said of so many of us - though not you, not you of course. These are my favourite types of pottery to find, and I found them all within a few tens of metres of each other, an old patch of the river, one that once was wealthy and is still. All these were made to be admired. The westerwald handle has a hole made where a silver lid would have been mounted. The delftware bowl has the most effortless curves to it, and beside it, those eyelashes, the manganese stripes. They’re not whole anymore, but they have survived. And they’ll be treasured now.

Forget the old, historic coins... this is my type of money... “FREE BEER MONEY.” I found this token while mudlarking in the hot, summer sun on Saturday. I was sweaty, tired and ready for a cool, refreshing pint of locally crafted beer, so this token was a welcome surprise! I found it close to pub along the river, but unfortunately, it doesn’t accept these tokens anymore. Such a shame! . London was once the largest port in the world, and there were many pubs located along the river to serve the sailors, merchants, watermen, lightermen, stevedores, dock workers and local residents. Many of these old pubs still exist along the River Thames in London. My favourite riverine pubs are the Mayflower pub in Rotherhithe, the Prospect of Whitby in Wapping, the Trafalgar Tavern in Greenwich, The Dove pub and the Blue Anchor pub in Hammersmith.
