“Climax” (2019) is the latest film from French arthouse director, Gaspar Noe. If your someone who enjoys movies that are more plot based or revolve around some semblance of a plot, this film is probably not for you. The premise of “Climax,” is very interesting and really quite simple. Essentially, a dance group, after rehearsing in a large industrial sort of warehouse, throw a party. The only anomaly being that someone spiked the “punch” with an extremely potent dose of LSD. What could go wrong? Evidently quite a lot as the dancing group quickly goes from euphoria to pure unadulterated horror. The rest of the film serves to highlight the the descent of the group and push the boundaries to how far down into the inferno they can go. By the time that the film reaches its end, it has left you exhausted and mentally battered. This can be seen as a good thing as the film has effectively ran you through the emotional and mental gambit, but in my case, it really maims the continuity of the film as there is really no way I think I would “Climax” again. Probably the most interesting aspect of the film and the way in which it works the best for me, is the fact it says quite a bit about human nature. Noe is showing the audience how quickly the glass house of civilization and relative safety can shatter once a stone is thrown or acid is unknowingly dropped. Overall, Gaspar Noe’s “Climax” is a film that will divide audiences. If you are a fan of “art house cinema” or any other of Gaspar Noe’s films then I’d say “Climax” is worth a watch. If not, I would probably advise you to steer clear.
