Fancy meeting you here! • JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT | UNTITLED | 1982 • I was so jazzed to see this guy at @TheBrantFoundation the other day, where it is currently installed as part of their amazing #JeanMichelBasquiat exhibition! The inaugural exhibition in their new East Village space, the show brings together an incredible array of Basquiat masterworks from every period of his extraordinary (if abbreviated) career and life – including the infamous ‘Untitled’ from 1982, which I haven’t gotten to see since we had it in May 2017. Seeing it now, I’m just as blown away  by the raw, uncensored intensity and sheer graphic voltage of this incredible painting. • Amongst the most searing renditions of Basquiat’s signature, skull-like motif and from the pivotal moment of his career, this painting is still, for me, the ultimate embodiment of Glenn O’Brien’s electrifying description of the brilliant young artist who created it: “He was the once-in-a-lifetime real deal: artist as prophet. He was a scathing archive researcher and titanic mythos storyteller, he was a Dante-esque poet of data processing, a new wave griot, a self-crowned king, a witch doctor, a poet, a musician, a heart as an arena… I hope he knew it. He made it, on a technical knockout. Boom. Boom for real." • Such a delight to see this work (as well as the other INCREDIBLE masterpieces in this show) – if you haven’t had a chance yet, try to get by the Brant Foundation before the show closes ‪on May 15th‬: it’s absolutely once in a lifetime too.
