Amur leopard - pencil on Strathmore. This drawing is from a couple of years ago, he was lovely to draw but challenging with all those spots! Drawn from my own reference photos......approx 40 x 30cm. There are a few things that I try to to keep in my mind when drawing big cats - 1 ‘keeping everything in the correct proportion’ making sure it looks right! Everything in the right place and size. 2 ‘texture’ - getting all those different lengths of fur, short fur on the nose, longer fur around the neck, the shapes the fur makes, the way it lies. 3 ‘depth’ keeping the right depth of shading, light areas and dark areas. 4 ‘patterns’ spots or stripes, markings. Lots to think about to keep each drawing on track!!! ......
