World Milk Day is coming up on Saturday, June 1st. To celebrate, we thought we’d go through some common dairy farming and milk myths ahead of the big day - and explain why they’re just that - MYTHS. . . . Mama Annie had her new calf - a heifer! - sometime over night between Sunday and Monday. When we came to the barn Monday morning, the calf was standing, all fluffy and dry after being thoroughly licked clean by her mama. However, it did not appear that she had nursed; her tummy was flat and she was bawling periodically. We milked Annie in the parlour, then bottle fed her colostrum to her very hungry calf. The two have been together since then and we have not yet observed the calf to be nursing, so like always, we feed her her mama’s milk with a bottle. We will move her to the calf nursery later today - about 36 hours after birth. This is Annie’s second calf. As you can see in the video, Annie is not afraid of her farmer. Her calf, curious and precocious, runs up to the camera, perhaps thinking it is feeding time again. Annie watches, but she’s not nervous or overly protective. She knows from her experience that her farmers will care for her and her calf with compassion, affection, and respect. When the time comes to move her calf to our comfortable calf nursery, we will do so calmly and gently. If Annie’s behaviour thus far is any indication - she’s been more interested in munching on feed at the feed bunk than in her calf - it will be the typical relaxed and stress free event it always is. Check back tomorrow for video evidence. At the risk of sounding like a broken record (I know we stress this often...), remember that the best source of info about animal agriculture will ALWAYS be where it all happens: the farm. Have any questions about cow-calf separation or any other farming practice? Please ask! . . . #farmlife #askafarmer #motherdaughtertime #happycows #newbaby #worldmilkday

Brand new life We sometimes get asked on Instagram why the calves aren't with their mothers, so I will give a quick explanation. (@seejessfarm has a fantastic post that goes into further detail if you'd like to learn more.) Calves are not taken away immediately; we let their mom give them a good cleaning for a while. However, calves are born with almost no immune system. Their antibodies come from colostrum, or their dam's first milk. As you can see in this picture, the cow's teats aren't completely clean. Before the calf eats, we need to clean up the cow's udder so the calf doesn't ingest bacteria before it even has an immune system. We milk the cow into a pail and make sure the colostrum is healthy and then feed the calf it's mom's colostrum from a clean bottle. This is how we ensure the calf has the best chance at life. Cows are also large, clumsy animals and can very easily injure their calf just by stepping or laying in the wrong place. Also, the modern dairy cow does not necessarily have the instinct to care for a calf. Sometimes a cow won't even clean off her calf after it's born, and once it is gone the cow acts like she has forgotten about it. While this may seem "inhuman" to some, it is the most HUMANE way to raise our calves and cows. We are able to take over and ensure the calf is eating all of her milk, growing properly, and being taken care of if she is sick. We love all of our cows and calves and are doing our best to make sure they all live long, productive lives.

Happy dry cows dry cows are basicly cows on pregnancy leave. Before calvinig every cow has a 6-8 week holiday to just enjoy life. As the calving date gets closer, we pick them back up and take them to a pasture closer to the barm, were they are feed a special diet to prepare them for calving. As you can see here, they are quite exited to see the tractor . . . #familyfarm #prettygirls #drycows #cows #cowsofinstagram #happycows #pregnant #pasture #rural_love #ruralphotography #tractor #dairytruth #askafarmer #agriculture #agvocate #dairylove #kuhliebe #milchkuh #massentierhaltung #ilovecows #farmfacts #farm365 #landleben #landliebe #bauernhof #agriculture_global

People ask me, "are these organic"? It can be confusing to hear that a farm is not organic, through media exposure over the years general consumers have come to associate organic with more sustainable, healthy, and over all a "better option". But is that even #true? - It is first important to note that organic pesticides, even though derived from organic compounds are not necessarily safer than synthetic pesticides. They can be just as toxic. And also Research Studies have proven that Organic is not more #nutritious than Non-Organic fruit! #Google it. - We use both organic and #synthetic pesticides. But for organic only growers they can not use synthetic pesticides. And if they were to use non-organic spray's, they would not be able to legally sell as Certified Organic. Thus, they have to reapply the same Pesticide over and over again in one season as they don't have any other option! - This reapplication builds up #resistance and it means that organic farmers will have to apply more of the same Pesticide for it to be effective. Thus, organic farmers have lower #yields per acre and feed less people but charge more money! What's sustainable in that? - Practicing IPM and farming the way we do, means we are able to feed more #families per acre at a lower cost and are #healthier for the environment (more sustainable). - Positives of Non-Organic IPM: 1️⃣ we spray less often 2️⃣ we are more Sustainable because we don't build resistance, and thus future farmers for decades to come don't have to deal with super bugs! 3️⃣ we have higher yields per acre, meaning that we can feed more families per acre, making us more Sustainable for a family farm to be successful. 4️⃣ we're less costly than organic, because we don't have to charge ridiculous amounts to compensate for the reduced yield! - Above all, we want you to get to know your Farmer and to take a second to ask them, "what have your sprayed" and if they say they are, "no spray", then how are they controlling Aphids, Lygus Bugs, Spider Mites, Fruit Rot, Powdery Mildew!? Any one of these bugs/diseases can mean total crop loss. #AskAFarmer - Much love, Farmer Amir ♥️ - Ps. Strawberries are available at our store daily
