Couldn’t wait until tomorrow to post this upgrade on the kick grinder, wonder why I hadn’t done this years ago..!! I understand not everyone uses a strop, but it does have its place as the bald spot on my forearm proves it’s worth. It was particularly effective on a few wide gouges sharpened today, a razor sharp edge in just a few grits of emory paper. Any sort of ‘powered’ abrasive usually leads to cooking the steel without much effort, but this didn’t come close to that. First bit of tool making for months this evening. . . . This is a little concept I’ve had rolling around in my head for a couple of years, it sprouted from another plane idea - trying to solve a problem. I called this the ‘trammel’ plane - it’s now not a plane though offcourse as this solves the problem just as well it didn’t need to be. Funnily enough, I’m now not the first to draft up a tool like this as Clickspring in one of his last videos solved his problem just as I had intended to way back designing the first plane. This was going to be a plough plane with an extra short skate, but creating clearance for the cutter - without curving it seemed unnecessary if this idea works. It’s just a first go, layout lines are still on show a better version will be made soon. For those of you who hang your saw near your torch and have trouble with saw blades either breaking quickly or not cutting as well as they should, try hanging the saw so the blade is away from the rising heat. Note: While I don't recommend you leave your torch flame on all day, most shops I owned or worked in did. It was just common practice in high volume shops.
