Since I think it's still autism awareness week I guess this caption is relevant. Sometimes you don't just have to lower expectations, but throw them out of the window altogether. Some days the goal is purely to keep everyone alive and anything else is a bonus. Sometimes it's more than OK to not be OK. To cry it out and hope for a better tomorrow. Safe to say our easter holidays didn't exactly start on a wonderful note. I really don't think I'm cut out for this sometimes, to be a mum in general let alone a SEN mummy. I would give anything for my children to have amazing parents but they are stuck with us, so we just gotta keep going for them... World autism awareness... This is way too small a platform to describe how autism has impacted our life. But I really believe creating awareness is important. If we had known anything about autism it may not have taken so long for Joshua to be diagnosed, and it may not have taken us so long to believe and accept his diagnosis. One of the things Joshua struggled with, like many others with asd, is change. And what greater change could there be than an unplanned baby sibling after 8 years of being the baby of the family? While I was in labour jakob went through a range of emotions, worrying about me, wanting to see what was happening etc... Josh sat and played lego without giving it a second thought. When she was born we had to really encourage him to come over to the sofa and meet her. He seemed pretty excited, waving at her and poking her... And then basically ignored her for two weeks. Because it takes Joshua a long time to process information and deal with change, and it took a while for him to accept that she was permanent. Back in my nans day he would have probably been classed as slow, or not all there, even though he's incredibly bright. After a couple of weeks he started to come around and now they are basically inseparable, like two peas in a pod. He totally and utterly adores her, which makes my heart melt pretty much every day. The other thing with asd in Joshua's case - he doesn't quite know when to stop, to calm down, to leave her alone. He gets RIGHT IN HER FACE shouting with excitement instead of talking... And sometimes it'd just too much. But at least she's going to grow up pretty unphased by it I guess . An introduction The work that has begun at Petra’s Place would not be possible without our incredible team of world-renowned experts in child development, autism research, and innovative therapies. We’d love to introduce you to Dr. Dimitrios Paschos, our Clinical Director. Dr. Paschos is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and specialises in Intellectual Disability Psychiatry. He trained at South London and Maudsley and has worked as a consultant psychiatrist and in community and inpatient specialist learning disabilities services, both for the NHS and the independent sector. His special interests include the mental health of people with autism and/or intellectual disability, ADHD treatments and early intervention in preschoolers with autism. His work with our children will be instrumental in helping transform their lives in a way that they do desperately deserve. We are honoured to have Dr. Paschos work in such an integral role to our centre!
