This was me 3 years ago today. That may sound like a long time, but I still feel my injury physically and emotionally every single day. 3 years ago I went on a hike that changed my life. For those of you that don’t know this chapter of my story, I lost my footing and fell off a cliff hiking. I was air lifted to the hospital I worked at, and underwent multiple surgeries, spent 6 months in a wheelchair, had to relearn how to walk, and had numerous complications that delayed my healing, and hope. ⠀ .⠀ This was the darkest time in my entire life. I learned who my true friends were. I learned to appreciate things we take for granted that we don’t even realize. Things like stepping into the shower and bathing yourself, driving to work, getting dressed. You don’t realize how amazing that is until it is taken away from you. ⠀ .⠀ I was able to put myself in my patients’ shoes. I felt the feeling of helplessness. I was a total care patient. This experience gave me a true empathetic edge as a nurse when I care for my patients. I really DO know when I say, I know. ⠀ .⠀ 3 years later and I still say no to hikes. I have chronic pain and wear a brace to work. I play it safe when friends want to be adventurous. And I get embarrassed when I have to take the elevator when everyone else takes the stairs.⠀ .⠀ But,⠀ .⠀ Because of this day 3 years ago, I am grateful for the little things. I live life to the fullest. I appreciate good friendships, and I have become a more understanding nurse. I started my blog out of boredom when I couldn’t walk. And I am so glad I went for it, because it has given me so many opportunities to connect and network with amazing people. It connected me with YOU who’s reading this. And that makes me happy.
