I have very few photos of me in my 20’s. In fact I used to dread anyone getting a camera out, especially if I didn’t feel like I could ask them to delete it or cut me out before they uploaded it to the internet. And I really regret that, I feel like I have lost almost a decade of photographic memories. _ It’s only recently that I have started to feel more at home in my body and I think part of that is due to seeing my body more. As well as filling my social media feeds with body diversity, being photographed has felt quite therapeutic. _ Bill takes most of my photos and we try to make it as fun as possible. And I’m realising that I don’t always have to smile, or put my hand on my hip, or stand in a way that’s ‘flattering’. Some experimental poses have looked like I’m checking to see if my armpits smell but moving my body around has been fun! _ The channel 4 show Naked Beach suggests that looking at yourself in the mirror for a while everyday can really help with your body image. There isn’t a quick fix to undoing the damage that years of society’s ‘beauty standards’ and fatphobia does. But it’s worth the work, it’s truly liberating. All bodies are worthy of respect and love ❤️

It is in fact, a heavy burden to many Chinese. Due to this term, we have to conform to certain rules, customs and standards that our elders set. In a way, we are restricted to be ourselves as we are trained to follow what is expected of us from our parent's perspective rather than following what we desire. . . . There is the good side and bad side of this. Children would care for the elders when they grow old. They would pay respect to the seniors by seeking their advice for important family matters. The wisdom of the older generation would be passed on to their offsprings. . . . On the other hand, there are also shortcomings to this practice. Parents are inclined to take control over their children irrespective of their age. They expect their children to listen to what they say and follow what they expect them to do. Children are restricted from being who they want to be. Instead, they become who their parents want them to be. . . . Quadrangles are constructed in traditional Chinese residences to cater for such Chinese custom of filial piety. They have rooms sufficient to fit three generations of the family inside the walls. During our visit to Yangshuo, we had a chance to explore one, which has now been renovated into an air B&B. With such changes in place, it makes the quadrangle more welcoming to both the outside world and the family themselves. . . . Traditions and customs exist to hold the core values of an ethnicity together. However, we must take into consideration of how we practice them in our life. . . . For us, we believe that we should give our son the freedom to be who he is. We want him to choose want he wants to be, but of course still remember the basic principles of respect to not just us, but those around him. . . .
