Though I have many shortcomings, I’ve almost always been a girl who reads her Bible a lot. And even now, at one of the best seasons of my life so far, I still am dealing with complications in my degree plan, probably failing my exam this morning () weird health problems that make me sleep all the time, and my old friend Anxiety flaring up lately. I didn’t even brush my hair this morning—it’s still in the messy bun I slept in. If this isn’t falling apart, I’m not sure what is! And yet, my time in the Word helps me to know what Charles Spurgeon meant in this quote—it is not my discipline to read the Word that holds me together (because I have none) but my dependence on the Word. It is not me that holds me together, it’s Christ; and not my love for Him at that, but His love for me. The richness of His grace and mercy shines through every word of this ancient holy book. Maybe you're used to Him working through you, but now He wants to work in you. This requires surrender. It requires weakness. It requires trust. And most of all, it requires time. . . . So if you're there in the wilderness right now doing what you know to do by immersing yourself in His Word, praying, and meditating and still feeling like you can't feel or find God, just know: . . . God is with you. He knows your name. He sees you. He hears your heart's cry. He has a plan-- a good plan. He will find you in the wilderness. He will rescue you. He will give you a hope. He will give you direction.

One of the vital things to keep in mind in our study and meditation of scripture is that we need to take in the whole counsel of God. It is dangerous to pick and mix the parts of God’s Word that just make us feel warm and fuzzy and ignore that parts that are seriously challenging. One of these more challenging verses is the description of God as a jealous God and a consuming fire (we don’t often find this verse in encouraging wall art! ) But this is a truth about our God that we need to meditate on. I was thinking a lot on this verse as I illustrated it - particularly on the nature of fire. Fire is both incredibly important for warmth, for light and for cooking... but fire can also be very dangerous if you treat it lightly - it can burn, consume and kill. I wonder sometimes whether we approach God too lightly at times, thinking that we can live how we want then bring God unto the situation when it’s convenient... But our God is a jealous God. He will not share his glory with anyone or anything. His jealousy though, unlike human jealousy, is completely holy and right because he created us and redeemed us as his own people - chosen children to worship and follow him forever. When we wander from his design and intention for us, he is right to be jealous, and his jealousy will consume anything that stands between us and him. I don’t know about you but this truth is both incredibly encouraging and incredibly uncomfortable at the same time! Lord help us to live in the light of your revelation of yourself as a jealous God and a consuming fire. Help us to surrender any competition for lordship of our lives and surrender wholly to you. . .
