Did you know that - Nearly 450 million people worldwide are currently living with a mental illness, yet two-thirds of people with a known mental illness never seek out support. And that 1 in 5 young people have, or will have a serious mental illness. Yet, many youth experiencing a mental health challenge feel like they have no one to talk to, no one who understands them, and nowhere to turn to get help.
The month of May is a time to come together and take a stand for mental health. Here at Bigs and Littles NYC, we not only recognize the positive impact mentoring can have on the physical, emotional, and mental well-being of children and youth but is also committed to reducing stigma, increasing awareness, and advocating for people with mental health challenges every day.
This May - for Mental Health Awareness Month - Bigs and Littles NYC encourages you to help us break the stigma associated with mental health disorders by sharing your story to inspire those facing similar challenges and / or reaching out to someone you think is struggling with mental illness. Using your voice to advocate for mental health shows others that they are not alone and they are cared for.

"I've been a mentor for two years and joined the Junior Board last year. Being a mentor is such a rewarding experience, you learn from one another, make great memories and get to be involved in the community. Serving on the Junior Board amplifies the experience by connecting me to other mentors and allowing us to directly impact the programs and opportunities we have to share with our Littles."

Andrew Clerico has been a dedicated mentor at Bigs & Littles NYC since July 2017 and served on the October Ball Committee in 2018. He is now serving as the Chair of the Executive Junior Board. “I see Bigs & Littles NYC impacting the community in a really big way. If you can be there for your little in a one to one mentorship, that is something I think adolescents really need right now”

"As a mentor going into my fourth year with my mentee, I knew early on I could give even more to the mentoring community by volunteering my time and ideas to our Junior Board. I love engaging with others on how to drive further interest in mentoring, raising awareness, and collaborating with a group of people that is committed to all things mentoring. The Junior Board helps to plan for the future where more mentors and mentees journey through life together, and this purpose brings even more value to my own match and my volunteer efforts."

We are thrilled to honor the Anne and Carter Sullivan Family at this year's annual Spring Fling! Thank you and Congratulations to Anne, Carter, Will, Sam, Cary and Guy, recipients of our 2019 Humanitarian Award - We can’t wait to celebrate with you! As a long-time supporter and current Board Member, Anne has been deeply involved in the agency's growth and truly believes in the power of mentoring: “The impact is highly personalized to each match, but every kid who gets matched gets an incredible mentor. They’re exposed to things that they would never otherwise do or see, and they’re learning about worlds and aspirational things that they can do with their lives. Mentoring is opening up possibilities for kids; it’s life-changing.
